Sources: Jennifer Lopez is leaving 'American Idol'

    By Marc Malkin, E! Online

    FOX

Sources say "Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez is bidding the show farewell after the season.

Jennifer Lopez may have just been named by Forbes magazine today as the most powerful celebrity, but her reign at "American Idol" is coming to an end.

While J.Lo has publicly said she has yet to make a decision about her future on "Idol," sources exclusively tell me that she she's planning on calling it quits.

More from E: Jennifer Lopez Talks Marc Anthony, Casper Smart

"She's just too busy," one source said.

    That's so very true.

She's about to launch a mega concert tour with Enrique Iglesias that kicks off this summer in Latin America and the U.S. She plans to go worldwide in the fall.

I'm told Lopez will be on the road, at the very least, through the end of the year.

The next round of "Idol" auditions will begin while she's overseas.

The superstar apparently wants to free up her schedule next year, possibly taking a little hiatus from work to be with her kids.

"It is just like any working mom's dilemma," Lopez told us at Monday's premiere of "What to Expect When You're Expecting." "It's tough. It's a balancing act. You put them first and then you have all these other things that you have to do, that you have to give your time to as well, and you have to make sure that they're OK in the process."

Fox declined to comment on Lopez's future with the show.

Lopez has been on "Idol" for two seasons with one-year contracts for both.

Now the question is, will Fox try to change Lopez's mind with a much bigger payday?

Hollie Cavanagh feels thankful after 'American Idol' elimination

    By Ree Hines

Somehow Hollie Cavanagh hasn't lost her positive attitude despite losing her spot on "American Idol" last week. She visited TODAY Tuesday morning and shared the secret to her upbeat outlook.

"I think I just kind of had the mindset that I couldn't really complain," Hollie said of her "Idol" experience. "I was just thankful and blessed to be there."

'American Idol's' final three is Hollie free

    Getty Images

Hollie Cavanagh struggled with her second tune on Wednesday, and it cost her a spot in the final three.

    By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

As Ryan Seacrest was about to announce the results on Thursday’s “American Idol,” he noted that this was the week Chris Daughtry was shockingly sent home lo those many (six) years ago. But much like the rest of the episode, that was just a tease. In fact, the results were exactly as expected.

Hollie Cavanagh and Phillip Phillips were the final two singers onstage, and not surprisingly it was Hollie who was eliminated. It might be shocking that Phillip was the one standing next to her, but note that Ryan never said the two hopefuls were the two lowest vote-getters. It’s possible -- indeed, likely -- that the producers just wanted to make Phillip sweat out a results show for the first time this season.

Hollie was calm as she got the news and actually gave one of her best performances of the season as she exited to “The Climb.” Joshua Ledet was more upset at his friend’s dismissal, and there were plenty of shots of him crying that will surely be used in “Idol” footage for years to come.

Of course, Joshua himself was in no danger, not after overwhelming J.Lo so much on Wednesday that she had to respond in Spanish. Joshua said he found that attractive. Also attractive about J.Lo is that she’s beautiful woman. (People magazine says so.)

Another instance of an especially attractive J.Lo? Her Thursday performance, which featured a Man Throne, a host of dancers and enough gyrating and suggestiveness to make all those watching with their families send the kids upstairs to brush their teeth. Or at least to wish they had.

During a review of Jessica Sanchez's Wednesday performances,it was revealed that music executive Tommy Mottola e-mailed mentor Jimmy Iovine after the show and said he’d be in attendance at her first concert. (So viewers can expect him to be in the crowd for her home visit next week? Those montages always feature the three finalists putting on a show before the locals.)

    Slideshow: 'American Idol' top 3

Jimmy was less impressed with the teen, noting that she’s been doing the whole growling thing since she was in diapers and has the video clips to prove it. “After a while, the trick gets old. Everyone knows the rabbit is going to come out of the hat,” he said. But if he doesn’t want to sign her, I’m sure his buddy Tommy can hook her up.

And now that Phillip’s in the final three, it’s time to ask the serious question: Will Ford give him a car if he wins? The company has done that for the finalists in the past, but since the singer has gotten a medical note to excuse him from participating in the promotional videos, denying him a car would be poetic justice. Of course, it would also be terrible PR. But it’s a thought.

It’s also time to ask who’s in charge of dressing Randy Jackson. Wednesday night had him in the barbershop quartet getup. Thursday was another loud outfit highlighted by a Day-Glo yellow pin that looked like it came out of a goodie bag handed out at a kindergartner’s birthday party. There's a fine line between cutting-edge fashion and looking like you grabbed a handful of random clothes from the thrift store bin, and Randy's on the wrong side of that line.

And more importantly, who’s going to go next? Though Hollie’s exit was predictable, it’s anyone’s guess who will be standing in her shoes next Thursday.

Ryan Seacrest's proposal fake out on 'Idol': Comedy or cruel?

    By Us Weekly

    Fox

Ryan Seacrest popped a (but not *the*) question on "Idol" Wednesday night.

Good one, Ryan! Ryan Seacrest surprised fans and his girlfriend Julianne Hough Wednesday night on "American Idol" when popping the question to his love of one year live on the air.

    No, not that question!

PHOTOS: Ryan and Julianne's cutest moments

Speaking to "Rock of Ages" director Adam Shankman and Hough -- who appears as Sherrie Christian in the film -- Seacrest, 37, seemed to catch his girlfriend off guard.

"Julianne would you take the mic for a second?" Seacrest asked Hough, 23, during a break from the Top 4 contestants' performances. "There's something that's been on my mind for a while."

"There was a lot of kissing going on in that preview, huh?" Hough shot back, referring to the clip from her film that just aired.

"No, it's not that. It's a question I've been meaning to ask you and I don't want you to feel uncomfortable," her boyfriend said before slowly reaching into his suit jacket pocket to pull out a…piece of note paper.

    (Hough's initial reaction: "Oh, God!")

    PHOTOS: Stars' blingy engagement rings

Rather than present her with a diamond engagement ring, the Idol host asked that she do him a favor. "Will you...give this note I wrote to ("Rock of Ages" costar) Tom Cruise? I'm such a big fan -- I loved him in 'Cocktail,'" Seacrest told Hough.

Ever the good sport, Hough relaxed and bantered right back with her boyfriend.

"Wait, but didn't we write that (note) together last night?!" she said.

Do you think Hough was in on the gag? If not, do you think it was funny all the same? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Hollie can't make 'American Idol' judges 'Love' her

    By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

    Michael Becker / Fox

Hollie Cavanagh performed "I Can't Make You Love Me" on Wednesday, and Randy Jackson said it was the wrong song at the wrong time.

Hollie Cavanagh’s second and final song on Wednesday’s “American Idol” was the Bonnie Raitt classic “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Sadly for the young singer, it proved to be prophetic as far as the judges were concerned.

On a night when Phillip Phillips, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez all received over-the-top praise from Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, Hollie left the panel looking for more. More importantly, on a night when each of the other three contestants finished with arguably their best performances of the season, hers caused Randy to accurately note, “There were no moments for me. It was the wrong choice at the wrong time.”

After each contestant had already been onstage for one solo, one duet and a group performance, Phillip began the final portion of the show with Damien Rice’s “Volcano,” a perfect song for his abilities and the type of tune that could be an instant hit for him. Steven noted, “I heard the musician that time. That's the kind of song I could listen to on headphones over and over.” It was a departure from Phillip's blah performances in recent weeks.

Joshua went old school with James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” and his voice powered through the notes like the Godfather of Soul's. Randy called it one of the best performances in “Idol” history, which should be no surprise considering he said last week that Joshua was one of the best two “Idol” contestants ever.

As for Jessica, she took a bigger risk by choosing “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” a song nailed in “Dreamgirls” by Jennifer Hudson and attempted by approximately 900 “Idol” hopefuls since. But to say that she came through undersells how well she performed it. On a night when she probably needed a game-changer of a performance, she delivered one and then some.

Hollie, on the other hand, was better in her first solo, thrilling Randy by covering Journey’s “Faithfully.” But just as the judges were talking about her peaking at the right time, she fell right off the mountain an hour later. It would be a major upset if she isn't the singer sent home Thursday.

Wednesday’s “Idol” also offered the usual dose of unanswered questions: Was Randy leaving for his barbershop quartet concert right after the show with that ridiculous sports coat? Or was there some other reason he fished that thing out of the "1940s Outfits" box in the costume closet? Did whoever decided to put Jessica and Hollie on swings for their “Eternal Flame” duet also consider making them wear schoolgirl uniforms and ponytails to complete the look?

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

And was Julianne Hough in on the joke when boyfriend Ryan Seacrest made believe he was reaching for a ring to propose, only to instead pull out a note for one of her “Rock of Ages” co-stars? If not, the stress that Hollie is feeling after Wednesday’s show will be nothing compared to what’s in store for Ryan. Faking a girlfriend out like that isn't a way to make someone love you either.

What did you think of Hollie's performance of "I Can't Make You Love Me"? Do you think she'll make it to the final three? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

Eliminated 'American Idol' contestant Skylar has no hard feelings for J.Lo

    By Ree Hines

With just three weeks to go in the competition, Skylar Laine was sent packing from "American Idol" following her last performance. Now the singing hopeful looks forward to her future career and looks back on "Idol" without regret -- or hard feelings.

During a Tuesday morning visit to TODAY, Skylar explained that despite rumors to the contrary, she didn't feel slighted by judge Jennifer Lopez's less-than-warm farewell for her.

"I wasn't disappointed," she explained. "I don't think it was anything personal or anything. She probably had somewhere to go. … She's a busy person!"

Surprise! Hollie survives again while Skylar gets the boot on 'American Idol'

    By Craig Berman, TODAY.com

    FOX

It came down to Hollie and Skylar and Thursday, and it was the country girl who was sent packing.

When her run on “American Idol” finally finishes, Hollie Cavanagh would be a natural fit on a different reality TV show: “Survivor.”

She got the second-lowest number of votes on "Idol" this week, the fifth time in the last six weeks that she’s been among the lowest vote-getters. But she’s never quite hit the bottom, and that’s earned her a spot among the final four contestants in season 11.

Instead, it was Skylar Laine’s gun-toting country twang that was shown the door. Skylar has been nothing but fun all season, but has lost some of her mojo in recent weeks and was always a better performer than a singer. The show will be duller now that she’s gone, but it’s not like leaving at this stage is a death sentence for country singers. Think Kellie Pickler in season five, who came in sixth and has done pretty well for herself since.

A month ago, not many would have expected Skylar to go before Hollie, when the latter looked scared to death and overthought every note like a karaoke singer. But Hollie has since found her stride and is getting better every week. Though she still has a lot of ground to make up, she’s the lone finalist who seems capable of surprising every week.

While everyone else is in play-it-safe mode, she’s having to fight to stay in it each week and has responded with a series of strong performances. She's been the least predictable of the finalists, and is using that to her advantage by coming through in the clutch.

The results were great news for Phillip Phillips, who Jimmy Iovine said was “coasting” but continued to sail toward his inevitable spot in the finale. He also looks to be getting a health-related excuse note for missing the filming for the Ford music videos, which at least saves him the embarrassment of seeing himself in the commercials on Thursday nights.

Skylar's elimination was also big for Jessica Sanchez, whose “Proud Mary” was termed a “travesty” by Jimmy, yet earned her the most votes among the women still in the competition. Between that and the comments about Phillip, it was a rare night when the Interscope boss had his fingers far from the pulse of the “Idol” voters.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Joshua Ledet, the third member of the top three, was a no-brainer given how well he sang, and the superlatives the judges tossed his way Wednesday. Given how well he, Phillip and Jessica have done this season, it’s hard to imagine Hollie lasting past next week.

But then again, at this point you bet against her at your own peril.

Is it 'Time' Phillip Phillips winds up in 'American Idol's' bottom three?

    By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

    Michael Becker / FOX

Phillip Phillips wasn't great on Wednesday night, but the judges still loved him.

Phillip Phillips has been the favorite on “American Idol” for most of season 11. On Thursday night, viewers will find out how strong a position he’s really in.

Dave Matthews version 2.0  had the worst solo of any of the five finalists on Wednesday with “Time of the Season” by The Zombies. And while the judges praised the melody, the chorus was too high for his voice and it was the weakest performance he’s had so far.

Well, it was either that or his duet with Joshua Ledet in the first hour, which was the most uncomfortable rendition ever of “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’.” Not only was it no Righteous Brothers, it was no Tom Cruise singing to Kelly McGillis in “Top Gun” either.

Moreover, his performance came on a night when perennial bottom-of-the-packer Hollie Cavanagh earned raves from all three judges. Though Skylar Laine and Jessica Sanchez weren’t perfect, they were better than he was. And Joshua got another standing ovation from the judges, who might as well save themselves the effort and just stand through his entire performance next time. Steven Tyler even called him one of the top two “Idol” contestants ever. (Highly questionable.)

Even with his competition doing well, Phillip probably won’t be the singer voted off this week. Hollie sang first (usually a negative) and always struggles to win support, though she did get a standing O from Steven and Randy Jackson for her first effort. Plus she tempted karma by singing “River Deep – Mountain High,” the song that got Pia Toscano tossed off the show early a year ago. Hollie gets better every week, but at some point that gap is going to be too hard to make up.

If her escape-artist act continues, that will likely mean trouble for one of the other women. Skylar was bottom three last week and didn’t have one of those “moments” this week that changes the game, and Jessica has already been the low vote-getter once this season.

But if Phillip is not at least revealed as one of the two or three lowest vote-getters Thursday, it’s time to lock him into the finale. Avoiding the bottom yet again will mean that his winning personality, pop-music sound and strong stage presence has the audience in the tank for him regardless of how he does on any particular week. It would put him in a separate category from the other four, who rise or fall in the hierarchy each week based on how they did in their last number, or the weather, or what else is interesting on Facebook besides the voting app.  If Wednesday’s performances don’t put Phillip in danger of leaving early, nothing will.

Apart from that, the big drama was how “Idol” would kill a two-hour block of time with just five singers. We got some quality banter from Jimmy Iovine and guest mentor Steven Van Zandt, who have known each other forever and have a rapport that shows it.  Ryan Seacrest also refused to try on Jessica’s high heels, and Randy set a record for long and rambling comments that failed to end in a coherent point.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

But the big question remains whether Phillip’s fans bring back that lovin’ feelin’, or whether it’s gone, gone, gone.

What do you think? Is it gone or strong as ever? Tell us on our Facebook page!

'Safety first' the mantra for 'Idol' this season

    By Craig Berman

Once upon a time, “American Idol” forced its finalists to go outside their comfort zone. If the theme weeks didn’t take care of that, the constant browbeating of the judges was incentive enough. Better to do what Simon Cowell said than to listen to him complain every week, and if he turned out to be wrong and the audience didn’t embrace the new you, that was just a tough break.

    Oh, how times have changed!

Elise Testone, the sixth-place finisher and most recent contestant to be eliminated from "American Idol," chats about her controversial song choice and her edgy sound.

Now we get judges criticizing Phillip Phillips for daring to be too artistic and picking the wrong Dave Matthews song to cover. Though he survived last week, Elise Testone did not, in part (the judges suggested) because she picked an obscure song to sing. Play it safe, they warn their favorites. Don’t do anything too risky, or you might get sent home.

Here’s the thing: That’s great advice if the judges are looking to be strategic. It’s just bad advice if the goal is to develop the finalists, or to have a more interesting show.

“Idol” judges are far more risk-averse than they have been in the past, but they have good reason to be. The show’s voters have not rewarded contestants who go away from their strengths over the past couple of seasons.

Colton Dixon hadn’t been in the bottom three all year, but got sent off two weeks ago after his ill-advised decision to cover Lady Gaga. Jessica Sanchez can blame song selection for her week at the bottom of the charts (and credit the judges for keeping her around despite that).

It’s not just this season either. Pia Toscano a year ago got booted the only week she went away from the ballads. Meanwhile, Scotty McCreery resisted all calls to try something besides country or country rock, and emerged as the season 10 champion. The “Idol” voters have spoken, and they value comfort and stability, not contestants who stretch themselves.

That makes it an easy decision for each individual finalist. If the audience is going to smack you down for trying something different, there’s no incentive to take risks. But it’s bad for the show because it makes the performances predictable and boring.

Everyone knows that Phillip, Jessica, Skylar Laine and Joshua Ledet are going to sound the same every week (Hollie Cavanagh is less predictable, but mostly because we’re wondering whether she’ll relax and sing well or tense up and do her sing-by-numbers thing). It will come down to whoever’s music best matches what’s on the audience’s iPods, which is likely Phillip judging by what has happened so far.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Nobody is ever going to criticize Skylar for singing country rock, or Joshua for picking songs that give him a lot of big notes to power through. But it’s also hard to open new eyes or gain a lot of ground that way. A great performance might inspire more dedicated texting from fans, and a bad one might see them fall asleep before voting starts, but nothing more. It's easy to tune out singers if you haven't liked them in the past, since odds are small that they are going to change this week.

In short, you don’t actually grow as an artist that way, which has been a problem over the past couple of seasons. The finalists are more polished than when they started, but not necessarily better, because they have rarely been stretched beyond what they were already good at.

And while it’s easy to blame the judges, the “Idol” voters have nobody to blame but themselves for that. Just ask Colton Dixon.

Do you think the contestants are playing it too safe? Are the judges being too conservative? Tell us on Facebook.

Elise didn't feel it was her time to get cut from 'American Idol'

Elise Testone was eliminated from "Idol" on April 26.

    By Anna Chan

Elise Testone had a "permanent vacation home" in "American Idol's" bottom three, as mentor Jimmy Iovine has said, and on Thursday night, she was finally eliminated.

"I was a little bit surprised just because in my heart, I didn't feel like it was time for me to go," Elise told reporters during a conference call on Friday. But don't get her wrong. "It wasn't a total shock. I've been in the bottom three that many times, it's kind of inevitable that it would happen. ... I guess I just felt sort of like a fighter in that I was going to push through."

During Wednesday's performances, the judges all praised her performance of Queen's "I Want It All," but Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson criticized her for picking the wrong Jimi Hendrix tune for her second act. Jimmy agreed, but also slammed her pick for the first song.

"Steven did love my performance, he just worried about the song choice not being right for America," she said of "Bold As Love." "Randy kind of bothered me, but whatever. I just let it roll off.  ... I didn't feel like I was boxing with the song, and that's what Randy said. I didn't feel that way at all. I felt like the song flowed out of me very naturally and I was painting the picture and feeling the lyrics."

Though the trio (and definitely Jimmy) has had some tough criticisms for her, the singer and vocal coach said it didn't wear on her confidence. But it didn't make her feel very good either.

"What's frustrating about it ... this is (people's) first impression of me and sometimes I felt like the criticism didn't line up or was discrediting to things I have achieved and worked hard to achieve," she said.

But she's not -- and she didn't, even during the competition -- taking it sitting down. "I'm confident in myself and that's why I did speak up sometimes. Because I believe in certain things, and I don't want to just keep my mouth shut and smile. I'm never trying to be rude or argumentative, it's just honesty."

After three weeks of being unpredictable, "American Idol" voters finally did something conventional and sent home someone who was expecting the bad news.

For Elise Testone, nothing on "Idol" had been easy. Every week she seemingly had to start from square one with both the judges and a less-committed fan base. Mentor Jimmy Iovine, who is right more often than he’s wrong, noted a couple of weeks ago that her difficulty at getting votes after anything other than spectacular performances meant that she was always one bad week away from going home.

That proved to be the case, and the inevitable happened when she was voted off Thursday. She finished in sixth place, meaning the rebirth of classic rock on “Idol” will have to wait for another year.

Though the judges and Jimmy criticized Elise for her song choices, there was nothing wrong with her vocals. To channel one of Randy Jackson’s favorite phrases, she can definitely sing. Her problem was the same thing that often vexes contestants at this stage – voters tend to pick singers who sound like people already on the radio or on their iPods.

Elise stayed in her classic-rock lane on the show, and it worked out well for her most of the time. But on a night where there wasn’t anyone who did truly awful, she was the finalist who didn’t sound like anyone on the radio. People who sing like Elise does rarely last until the end on “Idol,” so making it even this far was a surprise.

The shame of it was that they had to send her home instead of the other live acts. Given the efforts of Queen Extravaganza, Katy Perry and season 10's Stefano Langone on Thursday night, any of them would have been more deserving of the boot.

Also in the bottom three this week were Skylar Laine and Hollie Cavanagh. Skylar was a surprise given how well she’s done lately, which will surely get her fans pumped up to vote earlier and more often next week. Hollie was much better this week than last, but it would be a big shock if she wasn’t the next to go.

That having been said, Skylar’s low vote total wasn’t the shocker of the night. That goes to Ryan Seacrest, who looked like he was totally cured from whatever ailed him on Wednesday’s show. (Whatever he took, we want some for the next time we get sick.)

Meanwhile, despite getting similar feedback as Elise as far as song choice is concerned, Phillip Phillips avoided the bottom three yet again and looks like a lock for the final. He had an off week, had his song choices criticized and he still gets nothing but love from the crowd. Will he have to throw up onstage to lose some fan support? We're starting to wonder.

Joining him in the top three were Joshua Ledet and ... Jessica Sanchez! It’s great news for Jessica, who is making the judges look smart for using the save on her. Joshua, on the other hand, has such a big voice and great attitude that it’s hard not to like him, and the judges clearly do.

Still, like everyone else, he’s just one bad week away from going home.

Do you think Phillip will eventually land in the bottom three?
