That's nuts! Dr. Phil helped with own vasectomy

    Charles Sykes / AP

Dr. Phil McGraw helped with his own vasectomy, which he later had reversed.

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Most men don't even want to think about how a vasectomy happens. Not Dr. Phil McGraw. The talk-show host was a little, shall we say, hands-on when it came to getting the snip.

According to an essay McGraw wrote for Newsweek, back when wife Robin was expecting their son Jay, the couple decided one child was enough. So a doctor friend casually offered to have McGraw, then 29, come in to his office for the procedure.

The offer was so casual, in fact, that the friend didn't bother to book a nurse, and so had patient McGraw himself hand him the surgical instruments as needed. (McGraw's quotable comment on the operation itself? "It’s painful when they kind of pull on it.")

But six years later, McGraw's wife Robin let slip that she felt having only one child was the biggest regret of her life. McGraw's decision to get the vasectomy reversed was as speedy as it was to get it in the first place. The very next day, he mentioned it at the hospital where he worked and more doctor pals instantly offered to reverse the operation. And to think the rest of us have to wait months sometimes just for a checkup.

"They say, “Take your shirt off,” and they start plugging me into IVs," McGraw wrote in Newsweek. "I remember being in recovery and the doctors saying, “Wake up! We have to get you out of here.” They drag me out with one arm over each shoulder and drive me home. They dump me on the curb later that night."

The operation worked like a charm. Six weeks later, Robin McGraw was pregnant with their second son, Jordan.

Hooray for happy families and all that, but it's the helping with the operation that gets us. We shudder to think what would happen if Dr. Phil gets a sudden yearning for a root canal. Anybody got a power drill?

Was Dr. Phil, um, nuts to help out with his own vasectomy? Tell us on Facebook.

Casey Anthony's parents open up to Dr. Phil in first interview

    By Randee Dawn

It would seem that everyone has already had a say about the death of Caylee Anthony and the trial -- and acquittal -- of her mother Casey. But for the first time, Casey's parents George and Cindy Anthony are speaking out to Dr. Phil McGraw in an interview he claims had "no restrictions."

McGraw appeared with TODAY's Matt Lauer to discuss the interview and to preview exclusive clips.

TODAY's Matt Lauer talks with Dr. Phil McGraw after he conducted a 9-hour interview with George and Cindy Anthony who say they believed their daughter was trying to keep little Caylee away from them.

In the taped talk, McGraw quizzed the parents, who said they've had no contact with their daughter since she left jail, about several elements of the case. He started with a message posted on MySpace by Cindy saying that Caylee was missing over a week before Caylee was actually declared gone.

Cindy claimed that was metaphorical, not literal. "Caylee was missing in my heart that day. She wasn't missing physically. I thought I knew where she was at," she said. "I wanted Casey to know how much she was hurting me. And I thought she was purposely keeping Caylee away from me."

He also asked them about why they thought Casey's car smelled so badly -- could it have been that Caylee's body was in the trunk, as was suggested at the trial?

Cindy said, "Truthfully, to this day I don't know." Added George: "Do I want to believe Caylee was back there? I don't want to believe it. I'm going by what the investigators have told me. All I know is that Caylee is not with us anymore. I know that. I know that."

McGraw also asked about allegations that George might have helped dispose of Caylee's body, even if he wasn't involved in her death. To that, Cindy said, "George would have never have put us through those six months of not knowing where Caylee was if he knew where Caylee was. Because I watched his heart break every single day. And I watched him as frantic as he was."

Lauer had questions of his own, asking if McGraw was sure Casey's parents would not be profiting from this interview. (An unspecified donation was made to Caylee's Fund by McGraw's production company.) TODAY's Kerry Sanders reported that McGraw was on record saying that the money "would not be funneled to them" and McGraw told Lauer they would not accept money for the interview: "They've certainly gone on public record in my interview saying absolutely not."

"The real frustration here, Matt, is that no one has been held to account for Caylee's loss at this point. Casey was acquitted and nobody's been held to account," said McGraw.

Could the family have a relationship again, after all that's been said, asked Lauer? McGraw didn't answer directly, but said he had granddaughter around Caylee's age. "I put myself in that situation and said would there be a 30 day period of time where I wouldn't hear her in the background? ... This little girl was living with them and then for 31 days not one peep, laugh, cry, nothing? And warning bells don't go off? ... How could they not see?"

The full interviews with George and Cindy Anthony will air on "Dr. Phil" on Tuesday and Wednesday; the first part of the interview, originally slated for today, was postponed due to U.S. Open coverage.

Did Casey Anthony's parents reveal new info to Dr. Phil?

    By Ree Hines

The first promo showing actual footage from Dr. Phil’s much-hyped “exclusive, in depth” interview with Casey Anthony's parents is out, and the brief clip hints that George and Cindy Anthony drop a bombshell on the show.

The promo in question is no longer available on YouTube, but this earlier tease for the episode is still up.

While the preview doesn’t feature a single quote from the couple in their first interview since daughter Casey was acquitted of charges relating to the death of their granddaughter Caylee, it does highlight Dr. Phil’s questions and reactions. In between the requisite “Do you buy that that was an accidental drowning?” and “You know the truth, don’t you?” lines, there was one telling take.

“America’s never heard this explanation before,” the daytime host said in a confrontational moment, following an as-yet-unknown statement from the Anthonys. “Why have you sat on this information?”

Those who’d like the answer to that question and others will have to wait a little while longer. Dr. Phil’s interview with George and Cindy Anthony airs Sept. 12.

Experts: Dr. Phil's 'hot sauce mom' mixed punishment and torture

    By Ree Hines

Jessica Beagley, the mother of six who was seen punishing her 7-year-old son with hot sauce and cold showers in a video that aired on the “Dr. Phil” show, actually tortured her child according to experts.

On Friday, an Anchorage, Alaska court charged Beagley with misdemeanor child abuse stemming from the actions showcased during her November appearance on “Dr. Phil." Psychiatrist Dr. Janet Taylor feels there’s no doubt about the mom’s guilt.

“Well, I think, clearly, it’s abuse,” Taylor explained on the TODAY show Tuesday morning. “I mean, abuse is not just leaving a mark. Certainly it’s emotional abuse, it’s neglect and all of that counts. The fact is we have to distinguish between discipline and punishment. This was punishment and torture.”

Dr. Alanna Levine, pediatrician and spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics, agreed, calling Beagley’s actions a “black and white” case of abuse.

“This is completely inappropriate,” Levine told TODAY host Matt Lauer. “It’s terrible for the child being punished and for the other children in the home as well, who are witnessing.”

One child who definitely witnessed Beagley’s extreme methods was the 10-year-old daughter she tasked with filming the disturbing clips later shown on TV. Both Taylor and Levine pointed out that the problem with Beagley’s extreme approach to punishment is that it’s not only inappropriate for all children involved, it’s also ineffective.

“You don’t want to scare your children into listening to you,” Levine said. “You want them to listen to you because they respect you. And they’ll respect you if you mean what you say. You just have to be consistent with very small, repeatable consequences — taking away television, cancel a play date — things that don’t enforce harm on a child.”

Otherwise, as Taylor added, “the child’s not learning a lesson. They’re terrified.”

The wife of an Anchorage police officer has been charged with child abuse after being taped making her young son swallow hot sauce as punishment for misbehaving. This has started a debate over what is appropriate discipline.
