Vampire Nicolas Cage sinks his teeth into readers

    CBS

    By Anna Chan

Vampires are all the rage, whether they be on the big screen (Hi, sparkly "Twilight" vamps!) or the small (Ooh, "True Blood's" dreamy Eric ...).

But the latest bloodsucker to capture Clicker readers' attention? None other than movie star Nicolas Cage! What? You didn't know he was a vampire? OK, so maybe he's not exactly a bloodsucker.

When the actor appeared on "Late Show With David Letterman" Thursday, the funnyman couldn't resist asking the star about a 140-year-old photograph that popped up last year. The image? A dapper mustachioed Cage (or someone bearing a very, very strong resemblance to him). Did we mention the photo is 140 years old? When the ancient snapshot surfaced, the owner, Jack Mord, theorized that the image the actor -- the undead actor -- was proof that Cage could control his aging process.

But the actor was quick to shoot down the theory. "I don't drink blood, and the last time I looked in the mirror, I had a reflection," he told Letterman.

It was a tale that many readers had fun with and made our top story of the week.

"Oh sure, like he'd admit it!" tweeted reader Drew McFarland.

"There is no way that this is not him!" reader Joan Rogers wrote on our Facebook page. "I can't wrap my mind around how it is him, but it definitely is him!!"

"The fact he even had to dismiss the rumor cracks me up," reader Kim said on Twitter.

No. 2 on the list? The Duggar family. But instead of family-friendly fun, the big reality-TV brood was at the center of an alleged blackmail plot. A woman in Iowa tried to extort Discovery Communications, the parent company of TLC, which airs "19 Kids and Counting." Her demand? Either cancel the family's reality show or pay her $10,000, or she'd release photos of a family member in "apparently intimate situations" with an older man.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Needless to say, Discovery didn't fold, and instead, the FBI became involved and she's now facing extortion charges. As readers noted, there are better ways to get a show you don't like off the air.

"I'm a big fan of the 'off' button or the channel up/down button. Take your pick," wrote reader Mary Ann Peden-Coviello on our Facebook page. "I am not much a fan of criminal activity to force a network to shut down a show."

Next up? Drama, naturally! To be more specific, "Biggest Loser" drama. Readers haven't been quiet about their ... umm ... less-than-positive opinions about contestant Conda. And when she busted out yet again with her weekly requisite complaints, readers let loose with their own unhappy thoughts about her.

"I have watched the Biggest Loser every season it was on. This is the first year that I am uncomfortable watching the red team - all the back-stabbing, gossiping. I have to say that I hate Conda," wrote reader Lydia Collazo on our Facebook page. And that was one of the nicer comments!

Nicolas Cage: I'm not a vampire

    CBS

Nicolas Cage addressed the vampire talk sparked by a 140-year-old photo a man that looked a lot like him on Thursday night's "Late Show."

    By Ree Hines

A Civil War-era photograph featuring a man with more than a passing resemblance to Nicolas Cage had the Internet buzzing last year when it appeared on eBay. On Thursday night's "Late Show With David Letterman," the actor chimed in on the image and addressed the ridiculous rumor that the man in the photo might actually be him.

"Well, let me say that there is a resemblance," he said when the host showed him the vintage photo. "But how can I be polite about this? It's a somewhat slowed down version of me."

The original theory put forth by Jack Mord, the individual who listed the 140-year-old shot on the online auction site, was that the only thing slowed down about it was the aging process of the actor.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

"My theory is that he allows himself to age to a certain point, maybe 70, 80 or so, then the actor 'Nicolas Cage' will 'die,'" he wrote in the comments section of his listing. "But in reality, the undead vampire 'Nicolas Cage' will have rejuvenated."

When Letterman brought that up, Cage, who knows a thing or two about vamps after not quite starring as one in 1988's "Vampire's Kiss," was quick to shoot it down.

"I don't drink blood, and the last time I looked in the mirror, I had a reflection," Cage insisted. "So I'm not going with the vampire theory. I'm not going to do it."

It's hard to argue with that, unless, of course, he's still around in another 140 years.

Catch more from Letterman's interview with the actor in the clip below:

Letterman's prediction: Stern will make America's 'Talent' cry

Watch out, "America's Got Talent" hopefuls! According to late-night host David Letterman, Howard Stern will bring out the waterworks on the show.

    By Ree Hines

On Wednesday night, David Letterman celebrated 30 years of making late-night audiences laugh, and he invited friend and frequent guest Howard Stern to share in his trip down memory lane.

"You have gotten so much better looking over the years," Letterman told Stern.

And frankly, truer words were never spoken. To back up his claim, Letterman flashed a photo from Stern's first appearance on the host's old "Late Night" show back in 1984. And, well, see for yourself:

    CBS

Aging like a fine wine, that one.

In those days, Stern was just flattered to be featured on television in front of a national audience. Of course, now, that's no big deal. The radio legend is poised to take on reality TV hit "America's Got Talent" next season as the newest judge on the panel after all, and he couldn't be happier about it.

"I sit at home and watch these shows like a mental patient," he said of his reality TV obsession. "I watch 'American Idol,' I watch 'The X Factor.' I watch 'The Bachelor.' My TiVO thinks I’m a 35-year-old woman."

As for how he'll fare on "Got Talent," Letterman had a prediction.

"You’re gonna make people cry," the host assured Stern.

Stern disagreed that it was likely, but admitted, "You know I can do it. Lord knows I've done enough of that."

Viewers will have a chance to see that for themselves when the new season of "America's Got Talent" – featuring 100 percent more Stern – premieres in the summer.

Kathy Griffin strips for David Letterman

    CBS

David Letterman gave Kathy Griffin his undivided attention on "Late Show."

    By Ree Hines

Comedian Kathy Griffin ushered in the new year sans dress alongside her annual countdown pal Anderson Cooper, and on Thursday night, she decided to relive the moment by stripping down for "Late Show" host David Letterman.

"Every year, I try to up the ante a little bit," Griffin told Letterman of her New Year's Eve antics. "You know, I've done it (on CNN) for five years now and I've been fired four years in a row. So this year, I thought, 'What can I do to not get canned?' ... I thought it would be appropriate -- Times Square -- to create sort of a moment, so I took my clothes off. And I didn't tell Anderson. I really didn't tell anyone."

After sharing a clip of her nearly nude holiday moment, the 51-year-old then said, "I'll do it right now."

    "Go ahead," Letterman replied.

With no more incentive necessary, the former "My Life on the D-List" star peeled off part of her dress and gave Letterman and his audience a show.

Letterman presses Kutcher for 'Men' death details

    By Ree Hines

When the newest man from “Two and a Half Men” stopped by “Late Show With David Letterman” Wednesday night, he planned to promote the show without revealing any pre-season spoilers. But the appearance didn’t go according to plan.

Thanks to a persistent pestering on the part of Letterman, Ashton Kutcher eventually let one new spoiler slip.

Not surprisingly, the detail the late night host was most interested in was the same one that’s kept fans guessing for weeks — just how Charlie Sheen’s former on-screen alter ego joins the dearly departed.

“Is it a medical problem or a robbery gone bad?” Letterman asked, while Kutcher stammered and claimed he had no idea. “Forgets to turn the gas? … Oh, he fell off the roof! He’s cleaning the gutters, he falls off the roof, breaks his neck, he’s dead.”

Nice tries, but Kutcher wouldn’t budge.

“I plead the fifth,” he shot back.

“Here’s my fear,” Letterman argued. “Next week you go on Leno and spill your guts.”

While the actor promised he’d do no such thing, he eventually gave in and offered Letterman an unexpected detail about his own character, the rejected and depressed billionaire, Walden Schmidt.

“I’m very heartbroken about this breakup that’s taken place,” Kutcher explained. “I may, in some way, shape or form, be trying to kill myself.”

The suicidal shocker left the host wondering about the bright idea behind the plot.

“I’m not a genius,” he said. “But what better way to kick off the season of a sitcom than with a suicide? You already killed Charlie. You have a murder-suicide!”

Do you expect to laugh in the face of the dark plot when “Two and a Half Men” returns? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

David Letterman delivers East Coast earthquake top 10 list

    By Ree Hines

Earthquakes aren't usually considered a laughing matter, but on Tuesday night's "Late Show With David Letterman," the host looked at the lighter side of the recent short-but-shaky East Coast event with his top 10 "things overheard during the earthquake" list.

    10. That was the scariest two seconds of my life!
    9. It's lootin' time.
    8. Hey, you forgot your champagne.
    7. 5.9 earthquake, it would have been a 6.2 if it had a better lead-in.
    6. These new Taco Bell chalupas are rockin' my world.
    5. My hiccups are gone! My hiccups are gone!
    4. Wheeeeeeee!
    3. Call FEMEMA -- the Federal Extremely Minor Emergency Management Agency.
    2. Damn, right in the middle of laser eye surgery.

    And no. 1? Brace yourself.

    1. Kirstie, stop with the jumping jacks.

Yes, that's right! Just one month after actress Kirstie Alley confronted Letterman over a long list of fat jokes he told in the past, he went there again.

Do you think Alley will return to the show with a whole new complaint, or will she take the quake-related ribbing in stride? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Kirstie Alley confronts Letterman over fat jokes

    By Ree Hines

Like some other late night hosts, David Letterman enjoyed plenty of weight-related laughs at Kirstie Alley's expense during the actress's "Dancing With the Stars" days. While it was all in the past, at least as far as he was concerned, Alley used her latest "Late Show" visit as an opportunity to take Letterman to task for all the fat jokes.

"I thought you loved me madly, and then you would talk about me being sort of chub," Alley chided. "Some of your jokes were funny, but I didn’t know if it meant you didn’t love me anymore.”

As for the jokes in question, Alley had a list of the worst offenders on hand.

"Last night on 'Dancing With the Stars,' Kirstie Alley fell on the dance floor -- how many of you felt it?" Alley read. She then delivered the follow-up. "The judges scored her an 8 – on the Richter scale."

    Ouch!

For his part, Letterman assured his friend it was all in good fun.

"You do understand that we do love you, and if you were skinny we’d tell jokes about that," he said before admitting, "Eh, probably not."

Should late night hosts hold back, or are just about any jokes fair game for the famous? Tell us what you think on our Facebook page.

Cryer on Sheen's meltdown: 'Nobody saw it coming'

    By Ree Hines

While Charlie Sheen’s now-infamous meltdown came after months of mounting public woes, the actor’s former “Two and a Half Men” co-star, Jon Cryer, insists that Sheen’s behavior came as a complete shock as far as he and others on the set of the show were concerned.

“It’s as much a mystery to me as it is to everybody, I think,” Cryer told “Late Show” host David Letterman. “I got a text from someone — I don’t even remember who it was — saying, ‘Charlie Sheen just called Thomas Jefferson a p----.’ I said, ‘I think things are getting out of hand.’”

According to Cryer, the reason Sheen’s actions seemed so unexpected was simply because no matter what the embattled star had been through in the past, there was no precedent for how far it eventually went.

“I mean, this has never happened before, honestly,” Cryer explained. “It wasn’t like, ‘Back in 1963, everybody remembers when Fred MacMurray went bats--- and started talking about freemason ninjas and stuff. He was crazy! And Vivian Vance started urinating on the set of ‘Here’s Lucy.’ So nobody knew. Nobody was prepared for this. I did not see it coming. Nobody saw it coming.”

But Cryer won’t be caught off guard again. He joked that he’s keeping an eye out on his soon-to-be co-star Ashton Kutcher.

“What gave me pause (about Ashton) was (when he) came on the (CBS) plane he says, ‘You know what I love about private jets? You can bring knives onboard,” the actor recalled with a laugh.

“Chapter two: he’s crazy like the first guy,” Letterman warned.

What do you think about Cryer's comments? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

David Letterman sings? Well, sort of

    By Ree Hines

On Wednesday night’s “Late Show With David Letterman,” the host gave his audience a taste of his vocal stylings with a clip of a routine he and actor-comedian Steve Martin prepared for CBS’s upfront presentation.

“The guy who owns CBS, Leslie Moonves, called me about six weeks ago,” Letterman explained. “And p.s., don’t spread this around, but they were a little panicky because this was right in the middle of all of that Charlie Sheen stuff, and they were just dizzy. … So (Les) calls me up and says, ‘We want to open up the presentation with a real blockbuster, a real bang. You know, get people in a good mood, get them feeling good, get them feeling great and then everything will be fantastic.’”

That’s when Letterman, Martin and band leader Paul Shaffer joined forces for musical number. Moonves, who is actually president and CEO of CBS, even joined in the fun. After Letterman and Martin worked on their routine, which primarily involved sing-shouting “It’s gonna be a big, big season” and swilling giant martinis, the bigwig came through and announced that the act was cut from the upfront fun.

Of course Moonves’ cut call was just for the sake of comedy. In the end, the video was part of the opening for Wednesday’s fall preview at Carnegie Hall.

What did you think of Letterman’s over-the-top upfronts skit? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Foster refused to defend Gibson on 'Late Show'

    By Ree Hines

Mel Gibson’s most vocal supporter has had a change of heart — sort of. While his longtime friend and “The Beaver” co-star Jodie Foster still extols his on-screen work, she declined an opportunity to defend the actor’s off-screen life during a Thursday night visit to the “Late Show.”

“Your co-star in the film is Mel Gibson,” host David Letterman began. “Here’s a guy that seems troubled. He’s had some trouble and seems troubled.”

Foster nodded along as Letterman described Gibson, but tried to shift the subject away from any non-movie talk.

“No, there was no inkling (of Mel’s problems to come),” she said. “But he’s wonderful in the movie. He’s extraordinary in the film, I have to say. People are amazed by his performance — beautiful and raw, very dramatic and funny, too.”

Foster has long praised Gibson’s performances, as well as the man behind them. When his reputation suffered after the release of recorded outbursts, claims of racism and allegations of domestic violence, Foster told “The Hollywood Reporter” that he is “so incredibly loving and sensitive …. And he's not saintly, and he's got a big mouth, and he'll do gross things your nephew would do. But I knew the minute I met him that I would love him the rest of my life."

But the director-actress was far less eager to promote Gibson's personal side while promoting their film on the “Late Show.”

Foster still referred to the star as a very good friend, but when Letterman asked if she could defend him, she didn’t even allow the host to finish the sentence before replying, “No.”

Clicky bits: Betty White offends Letterman; 'X Factor' welcomes Cole

    • While promoting her new book, “If You Ask Me (And of Course You Won’t),” on “Late Show With David Letterman", small screen legend Betty White inadvertently offended the host. Letterman flipped through the pages only to find a photo of White with his late night rival, Jay Leno. “Kill me,” Letterman snapped playfully. “Just kill me. Go ahead. Kill me right now.” White apologized and explained the shot by saying, “I lost a bet.”

    • While the current and upcoming “X Factor” announcements won’t be much of a shock, given the fact that show creator Simon Cowell spoiled the suspense in an interview last week, the latest news at least officially confirms one of Cowell’s teasers. Girls Aloud singer and U.K. TV talent judge Cheryl Cole is a lock for the show’s panel. Cole confirmed the news Thursday, stating, “I can’t wait to get started.” She'll share the “X”-panel with Cowell, record producer L.A. Reid, and most likely, Paula Abdul.

    • “Lost” fans who’ve found that they miss island eye candy Sawyer more than those convoluted mysteries are in luck. Actor Josh Holloway cowboys up for a primetime appearance on “Community” Thursday night. In the first installment of the two-part season finale, Holloway plays a man dead set on beating Jeff in his strongest subject at Greendale Community College — kicking butt and looking hot while playing ultimate paintball.
