Another show for 'Project Runway: All Stars' champ Mondo?

    Joey L / Lifetime

    By Anna Chan

"Project Runway" fan favorite Mondo Guerra was crowned the winner of the "All Stars" season Thursday, but he may not be done with reality TV.

Sure, this was his second shot on the Lifetime fashion-design competition, but who says he can't do it again? "Producers have kind of talked to me," Mondo told TODAY.com on Friday. "I might be back on 'Project Runway.' Not as a contestant, but as a ... you'll see!" What a tease!

The "Runway" champ revealed that there could be more TV life beyond "Runway" for him too. Fellow "All Stars" contestant Austin Scarlett had a Lifetime show called "On the Road With Austin and Santino," and it sounds like it's possible Mondo may get a program as well. "My producer was definitely having a couple of conversations," Mondo told us. "It's in the works."

Though things may be brewing for TV, the designer also admitted that it's not always fun having a camera in your face, following your every move. When he saw part one of the finale (which aired March 15) and watched himself get moody and upset while trying to create his final runway show, "I was really quite embarrassed," Mondo admitted.

On season eight, he had become a fan favorite not only for his creative designs, but also for his fun and quirky personality. When the darker side came out on "All Stars," the designer said he received some negative feedback. "A lot of people were like, 'Oh, you were so nice last year, and now you're condescending and whining and ungrateful. Now I want Austin to win.' That hurt my feelings," he said.

Mondo admitted that pressure contributed to the frustration viewers saw on the show this time. At the end of season eight, Lifetime posted a poll asking fans to vote on who should've won. "Ninety-five percent of the audience chose me, and 5 percent went to (winner) Gretchen (Jones)," he said. "It was really a lot of weight. ... I think because of having all the support from all the fans ... I really wanted to do my best in 'All Stars' for them. So that was a lot of pressure, and it did get to me at certain points and you saw it get to me."

That self-destructive side of him? "It's because I have such passion and attachment to what I produce," Mondo explained. "Sometimes, it doesn't come across on television, and it translates as bitchy, whiny, emotionally discharged Mondo."

So what's next for him, besides a possible show and spending his $100,000 cash prize? The other part of being the champ: the one-year gig as a guest editor at Marie Claire magazine. As fans of the show may know, the job also comes with a certain new co-worker (of sorts) who goes by the name of Nina Garcia, the publication's fashion director. Yes, one of the "Project Runway" season eight judges who threw her support behind the former season's winner, Gretchen, instead of eventual runner-up, Mondo.

Possible awkward work moments ahead for Nina and the designer? Maybe not.

Mondo told TODAY.com that the first time he saw the judge after season eight's final critique, "We ran into her and automatically, my stomach turned." But he went up to Nina, thanked her for her honesty and received an admission from the judge.

"She said, 'You know what? Because of my decision and because of you, I can't walk down the street without people yelling at me,' " Mondo recalled. "I think it's been harder on (judge) Michael Kors and Nina more than myself. ... It's one thing to hold on to the past and even better to look to the future. So I really am honored to work with Nina on a professional level, and hopefully, a friendship will come out of it."

'Project Runway: All Stars' winner is sew happy

    Barbara Nitke

"Project Runway All Stars" hosts Joanna Coles and designer Isaac Mizrahi

    By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

    It's about dang time!

Last week was like an hourlong tease, as we watched Austin Scarlett, Mondo Guerra and Michael Costello prepare for the finale runway show on "Project Runway All Stars," but never actually got to see their big moment.

    That's what tonight was for.

MORE: "Project Runway All Stars" finale: Who (almost) buckled under pressure?

The final three pulled up to Gotham Hall, where the fashion show took place, and problems started to occur.

Scarlett had to finish his red carpet dress, which meant there were pins on that piece that were hopefully going to be covered by a sash.

Michael's pieces weren't fitting right on the models. One outfit's sleeve was way too tight or another dress was six inches too big. What's going on?! He definitely had to rush to make that work before the show.

Strangely enough, Mondo -- who is known to stress out more than the others -- didn't have much to worry about. His biggest issue was a pair of tights that were supposed to be opaque but were actually sheer. So a little booty might show, we love that.

Regardless of what hurdles came their way, it was time to line up, because judgment day has finally arrived.

MORE: "Project Runway All Stars": Who won't be competing in the finale?

First, Austin showed off his self-titled collection. Then it was Mondo's "Therapy" line, followed lastly by Michael's "Serengeti" pieces.

Everything seemed to have come off perfectly! The judges -- including two guest judges: Tommy Hilfiger and Ken Downing from Neiman Marcus -- didn't give anything away while watching the designs on the catwalk.

So what did they have to say?

MORE: "Project Runway All Stars": Designers had to light up the runway ... literally

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Isaac Mizrahi didn't feel Austin's work was a collection. And the wedding dress threw off Tommy Hilfiger, although many of the judges agreed lots of women would love to get married in that gown, and Austin has a sort of "youth to his glamour."

Mizrahi felt Mondo's line was the most cohesive collection. "This designer really really gets it," Hilfiger said of Guerra.

GALLERY: "Project Runway": Remember when ...

Hilfiger told Costello, "I think you could put these in the stores tomorrow and sell them." But Georgina Chapman warns Michael that sometimes print looks a little too commercial, and Isaac felt he "mixed it in not the most interesting way."

With all that said, the winner of "Project Runway All Stars" is ...

    Mondo! Congratulations!

'Project Runway' designers are puttin' on the Broadway ritz

From l.: Kara Janx, Jerell Scott and Michael Costello have to make a Broadway-quality costume in a thrift-store style.

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

So this week we have the "Godspell" challenge, which will allow the judges a chance to cackle as they toss out one of their few (maybe only) reliable rules (don't go costumey!) to make the designers, well, go costumey. Welcome to Upside Down World, where good is bad and bad is good and, well, that's kind of "Project Runway" every week. Remember, it's not fun unless somebody cries!

Speaking of Upside Down World, none of the designers can believe Rami got sent home next week. Jerell is especially flummoxed, as he actually liked Rami's outfit. No one says "God knows it was certainly better than Austin's 'Golden Girls' outfit," but I'm sure most of them are thinking it.

But it seems Austin is just the man for the evening's Broadway challenge. He tells us that theater is the world of illusion and fantasy as he makes circular motions with his hands, so we know he really gets it.

Legendary composer Stephen Schwartz will be our very special guest. The designers will be creating an outfit to be used in "Godspell," specifically for Uzo Aduba's character. Then, there's a lot of garbled conversation about how the character is very rich, and steals money, but the cast dresses thrift store, to which probably made perfect sense in the half hour conversation Schwartz had with the designers, but sounds a little incoherent as presented here. But no one cares, because they want to have a Broadway debut! And get their bio in Playbill! That's a very big deal! Because tourists from all over the country will be crinkling up those Playbills and scattering them through Times Square after they've used them to toss out their old gum! Oh, and it's a separates challenge, as Uzo has to be able to put on the outfit while on onstage.

Austin is in such a good mood. This is his kind of challenge! He's even able to look on the bright side when it comes to Kara. He loves her emotional roller coaster, as she can be in a fabulous mood one moment, then rolling in a deep depression the next. He calls it a fun-filled theme park ride, I call it manic depression. Tomato, tomahto.

Mila thinks the designers have been unnecessarily complimentary to one another. Worse yet, Kara and Kenley are, like, friends! Was Mila the little girl in school who had a birthday party no one came to? Just guessing.

After sketching and Mood, it's time for Joanna Coles to pop in. She's VERY excited about this challenge, which means she arches exactly one eyebrow and does not seem spectacularly bored. She loves Austin's outfit, because it's currently hideous but will be fabulous. Uh, thanks? Joanna thinks Kara's boring outfit lacks ambition. I think it's time for the emotional roller coaster of Kara to plummet! Joanna thinks Mila should make a pencil skirt out of her garish neon fabric. I think Mila should return said fabric to the '80s from which it came, but if that's out of the question, I guess a hideous pencil skirt will have to do.

Joanna announces that she was in "Godspell" at some point, so she's taking this challenge to heart. Well, that accounts for her momentary interest in having facial expressions. She thinks Mondo's outfit is fabulous, but hopes it reads from a distance. Jerell is… fine. Joanna can't believe Kenley isn't doing polka dots. She loves the coat, but I think we can all agree it does not look so hot with the skirt.

A chill comes over 'Project Runway' designers in a seasonal face-off

Mondo gets a bit dotty in the most recent "All Stars" challenge.

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

Anthony has been auf'ed, so I suspect the workroom is going to be a little less fun this week. I guess it could be argued that another goofy challenge could be good for some laughs, but mostly those are just worthy of an eye roll (pick a muse! And make them strip in Central Park!). But even if the runway lacks for fun, I do foresee tension, backbiting and cattiness. How fashion-forward!

Angela addresses the designers with a bunch of bags. Yes, this is about the most useful Angela will ever be -- as a decorative coathook. Each designer picks a bag, and inside they find a season printed on a luggage tag. Their challenge? To create a sportswear look for a weekend getaway. But wait, it's four seasons and eight designers. It's a fashion face-off!

    The battles are:

    Austin vs. Kara for Spring

    Kenley vs. Mondo for Summer

    Mila vs. Rami for Autumn

    Michael vs. Jerell for Winter

The designers get a budget of two hundred dollars and one day. But good news -- they don't have to use the bag they picked. Still, I think Mondo was a little disappointed. He clearly had big plans for his orange handbag.

Mila is making a skinny jean with a cape. Rami is not threatened by Mila, and I can't blame him. Let me guess -- there will be color blocking! Why oh why don't the judges seem as annoyed by this as I am? Mondo isn't feeling confident, but he thinks Kenley is designing the same thing over and over. I will say, though, that Kenley is confident and Mondo seems to be a wreck. Really, he hasn't been the same guy this season, and I'm becoming worried about him. I do wonder if he's not feeling well and the grind of this show is just too much for him. Not that I don't want him to win, but I don't want this to land him in the hospital, either.

Still, it is a battle this week, and everyone is trying their best (more or less). To quote Mondo, "This is like Wrestlemania! Or Fashionmania."

But maybe more than a little Wrestlemania, because punches might be thrown. Jerell looks up and realizes Michael is making the EXACT same silhouette. Jerell asks him where he got the idea, and Michael jokes that he got it from HIM. This is not a joke I would make, because honestly, it certainly looks that way. Michael was futzing around and complaining that he didn't know what to do, then suddenly Jerell asks Kenley to put on his coat so he can check the sleeve length -- and voila, Michael is jamming out a coat that looks just like it. Yet again, I am underwhelmed by the increasingly annoying Michael. What happened to the Michael who, when he realized he was creating something too similar to April's look, made a point of changing direction?

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

It's Joanna time, which is yet again the most useless part of the show. Joanna nods a great deal and asks the designers how they feel about their looks, which is not the same as, oh, giving advice. Joanna would make a great therapist, but I suspect she might suck as an editor. Joanna tells Kara that her high-waisted pants are very fashion forward. Yes, but are they any good? Joanna likes Austin's colors.

Joanna moves on to the next season. Mondo tells her he's designing an outfit for a girl (representing him) going to his mother's birthday party. But isn't Kenley working with polka dots, too? Mondo declares that Kenley may be the polka dot queen, but he is the polka dot princess! Finally, a little spunk from Mondo!

Mila's pants are Mila pants, Joanna obviously points out. Rami's look looks like what Joanna is wearing, so she declares it very on trend. Does Joanna even have opinions, or is she just here to report that she's been to fashion shows and looked at what's happening next? I hope that next season, Joanna is replaced by a very fashionable monkey.

Finally, Joanna stumbles upon Jerell and Michael's repeating patterns, and she quickly senses that things are frosty for our Winter duo. Joanna calls a team meeting which resolves nothing, but gives everyone a chance to point out that it certainly seems like Michael ripped off Jerell. Though nothing changes and no action is taken, Michael is MAD. Mondo invites him to eat dinner with him, and Michael whines. He feels singled out! The haters are jealous! He just magically came up with this design that looks JUST like Jerell's and why doesn't anyone understand? Jerell comes in to eat, which is awkward with a capital A (and, as Mondo points out, just like his family dinners at home). Jerell says he doesn't want tension with Michael -- but then he keeps talking. Clearly, he wants an admission of guilt, and since Michael has repeated his "it just came to me and I was focused on my own little workstation" story so many times he's starting to believe it, Jerell doesn't get it. Eventually Michael stomps off, as he's not going to convince anyone he isn't a copycat -- except maybe Mondo, who is so tired and drawn I'm not sure he's been paying that much attention.

Move over, Conda! Make way for the worst reality TV players

Kate Gosselin on "Dancing With the Stars," Marcel Vigneron of "Top Chef" and NaOnka Mixon of "Survivor: Nicaragua."

By Anna Chan and Ree Hines

There’s nothing like a reality TV villain to inspire bad words from good viewers. Just see the comments that Conda Britt -- who’s been busy making her eye-rolling, complaint-filled presence known on “The Biggest Loser” this season -- has brought out from some of our Facebook pals.

    “OMG I want to smack her.” “I can’t stand Conda.” “(She’s) a total b-----...”

    You get the idea.

Of course, Conda’s just the latest in a long line of reality TV contestants to get us gabbing. Long before she started bad-mouthing fellow players and backtalking her trainer (seriously, Conda, show Dolvett Quince some respect), plenty of other hot heads earned their spots on our worst-players-ever list.

Here are a few of our top contenders:

NaOnka Mixon (“Survivor: Nicaragua”): If you thought “King Troll” Russell Hantz and Jonny Fairplay were bad, all thoughts of those two men were banished once you witnessed NaOnka’s atrocious behavior on the show. She spouted hateful comments toward her fellow players, stole and hid food from the tribe, knocked over a woman who wore a prosthetic leg and more. Then, SHE QUIT THE GAME! And it didn’t end there. Even after her season aired, she refused to apologize for her actions, telling E! Online, “I played the game exactly the way I said I would at the beginning: I would lie, cheat and steal, I would be faker than faux fur, I would pretend to be your friend and stab you in the back. I lived up to that.” All righty, then.

    Follow @ReeHines
    Follow @Anna_Banana

Kate Gosselin (“Dancing With the Stars” season 10): When it comes to bad attitudes on “DWTS,” the reality TV mom takes the cake. (Although Bristol Palin does deserve an honorable mention.) The problems allegedly started even before the season did. Her pro partner, Tony Dovolani, reportedly complained that “she doesn’t listen and can’t take direction.” (Well, no wonder she moved like a mannequin on the dance floor.)  Her bossy and argumentative ways in rehearsals quickly got to the usually patient and encouraging pro, who was so fed up by week two he (temporarily) quit the show during their practice. During her long, five-week stint on the ballroom bash, Kate also put her whininess, combativeness and weepiness on full display, and even her most ardent supporters couldn’t stand to phone in their votes for her anymore to keep her dancing.

Marcel Vigneron (“Top Chef” season 2 and All-Stars): Some may remember Marcel as the master jerk, er, master cook who harangued his fellow contestants on the second season of “Top Chef,” while others might remember him as the returning jer--chef who baited his competition during the show’s all-star season. But no matter where you remember him from, you’re bound to remember his bad attitude and big ego -- and his foam.  Yes, the only thing more annoying than Marcel’s bleep-packed outbursts (which, FYI, are far more tolerable when set to music) was his commitment to smother otherwise appetizing meals in that always-unappealing foam.

Gretchen Jones (“Project Runway” season 8): OK, let’s just put aside her totally flabbergasting win (featuring granny panties ... granny panties, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia!) over the genuinely brilliant Mondo for the sake of this argument. Let’s stick to her -- as many recappers noted -- Grinch-like personality: She was bossy, controlling, whiny, conceited, belligerent, manipulative and, as fellow contestant April declared, two-faced. (April also called her Hitler, but even we admit that was going a tad too far.) And you know someone’s a total jerk when even the always charming and kind mentor Tim Gunn couldn’t stand her behavior anymore and gave her a smackdown in front of everyone.

Courtney Robertson (“The Bachelor” season 16): Of course, Gunn isn’t the only litmus test one can use to tell a true baddie. When Ellen DeGeneres, aka the current queen of daytime and the nicest of “American Idol’s” former nice guys, doesn’t like someone, well, that kind of says it all. And Ellen hasn’t been shy in expressing her dislike for Courtney. It’s Courtney’s in-it-to-win-it (at any cost) attitude that has many of the show’s fans (like Ellen) and former contestants (like Jennifer Fritsch) ready to see her go roseless and leave the show. “Bachelor” Ben Flajnik, on the other hand, seems perfectly content with the manipulative skinny-dipper.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Jonathan Baker and Victoria Fuller (“Amazing Race,” “Fear Factor”): These two aren’t just the worst pair to ever pull up to a pit stop on “The Amazing Race”; they might just be the worst duo in reality TV history. Jonathan made his memorable “TAR” mark after he shoved Victoria -- yes, actually shoved his wife -- because she dared to pick up his discarded backpack and made them several seconds late to the mat. How did he console his weeping wife after that? By reminding her, “This is a race! This isn’t about compassion!” Sigh. But lest anyone worry about Victoria, an episode of “Fear Factor” later revealed that the (former) couple was in fact a perfect match. After some heckling from Jonny Fairplay, the former Playboy playmate punched the ex-“Survivor.” Not to be outdone, Jonathan ended up tussling with host Joe Rogan. Really.

Vicky Vilcan (“The Biggest Loser” season 6): Conda may be the “Loser” that has fans in a tizzy now, but it was once Vicky (with more than a little help from her in-game BFF Heba Salama) who earned all the ire. She was the contestant trainer Bob Harper called “Shakespearean” due to her over-the-top, manipulative ways. If there was drama to be stirred, she was ready and willing. See, Vicky was all about the game and winning it any way she could. (Well, she was also all about eye-rolling and sneering, but Conda may soon snag top “Loser” honors there.) That’s why Bob also called her the biggest game player in the history of the show.  As for what "Loser" fans called her, well, the less said about that the better.

Desperate designers search for muses on 'Project Runway'

    David Russell / Lifetime

The remaining designers were in search of a muse on "Project Runway All Stars."

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

Not to bum anyone out, but tonight's recap may be a little frayed around the edges (not unlike those Chanel jackets from a few years back) as my little dog Bacon, a rescue I've had since Denise Richards was married to Charlie Sheen, died unexpectedly earlier this evening following surgery. But fashion waits for no man or beast, so we will soldier on. R.I.P., little friend.

This week's challenge? The designers must find a muse to inspire a fashion-forward look. They must find this muse in Central Park, which is kind of like looking for inspiration at the airport or a 24 Hour Fitness. But that's not the only challenge awaiting our intrepid designers! There's a twist! They must convince their muse to give them the clothes off their back, then create outfits using said clothes.

The budget of $150 can be used to bribe the muse, and whatever's leftover can be used at Mood. The designers groan. I also groan. I mean, come on! What exactly does this have to do with actual design? The toughest part of this challenge is, if you ask me, trying to get someone to give you a decent piece of clothing so you can hand them a white T-shirt in exchange. I think most people would see this as a pretty crappy deal, even if you're a fan of "Project Runway."

While the designers run frantically around Central Park, Anthony notices that Mila has suddenly developed a personality. I'm sure she can be very charming when she wants something. Wasn't Cruela De Vil a charmer when she wanted all those puppy skins to make a fur coat?

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

The designers are getting a lot of "no" no matter how sweet and manipulative they try to be, however. Jerrel gives a chick $20 for her shirt, which is a good deal given that everyone else seems to be offering $50. Eventually everyone in Central Park has been hassled and stripped (which is sort of like what it was like visiting Times Square in the '80s, I suppose) and it's off to Mood.

While checking out, Kara runs out of money. Oh, no! She's screwed, right? No one's going to help her out this far into the competition, right? Actually, Anthony, Michael and Kenley all give her a buck. Mila thinks they're stupid. Of course she wouldn't help any of the other designers! Because none of them like her!

Mondo points out this is basically how he got into design in the first place -- buying crappy clothes, ripping them up, then making cooler stuff. So, Mondo was kind of like Molly Ringwald in "Pretty in Pink"!

In the workroom, Michael is not inspired. He's working with his tablecloth/macrame potholder top and not knowing how to use it. I'd suggest DON'T USE IT! It's not a Woodstock retro challenge, Michael.

Joanna time. Yay. Let's get some non-advice and therapist-speak from Joanna ("What do you think it looks like?"). Joanna wonders if this is a challenge Mondo could win. She feels anxious about Jerell's mix. Anthony, on the other hand, thinks Jerell's outfit looks like she's coming to America. I want Anthony to come back to the show someday and take Joanna's job. He may not always have great taste, but he's ALWAYS fun.

'Runway' designers show good taste with gelato-inspired challenge

    David M. Russell / AETN

Jerell Scott and Mondo Guerra try to get in the mood for designing on "Project Runway All Stars."

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

We're down to the last ten designers on "Project Runway All Stars," though I'm sure we're not down to our last wacky design challenge. It seems that each week the designers are put through the paces for our amusement, but with little opportunity to highlight their actual skills.

I guess making these guys show us how they can create evening gowns for Muppets or constructed from plastic knives or while wearing blindfolds makes things easier for the judges (she sent a model down the runway naked -- she's out!), I'm not sure it's determining who's the best designer. But then, I guess reality TV doesn't really care about that, anyway.

This week's challenge is all about taste. Literally. They must create a tasteful outfit inspired by gelato.

    Michael nabs grapefruit.

    Mondo picks cantaloupe.

Mila selects milk and sour cherries.

    April chooses blueberry.

Jerell picks fruits of the forest.

    Kenley grabs passionfruit.

    Austin picks vanilla Madagascar.

    Anthony selects green tea.

    Rami wanted kiwi.

Kara gets chocolate with cayenne pepper. She feels like the little kid in the park whose ice cream fell off. Because she has to use chocolate brown? Boo-hoo! I'd rather get stuck with chocolate than kiwi, honestly. But go ahead and cry over your spilt ice cream, Kara.

Diane Von Furstenberg will be guest judging. Michael is about to pee himself he's SUCH a fan. I could do without the hyperventilating, Michael. We get it. You LOVE her. And if seeing Diane in the flesh isn't enough to make Michael need a fresh pair of underwear, the revelation that the designers only have six hours to create a design should. Yet another challenge that just can't yield great results. What are we going to see? A bunch of shift dresses, muumuus and nighties?

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Our poor designers don't even get a chance to go to Mood -- instead MiniMood is set up in their lounge. This means they also don't have access to everything they want. April can't find black jersey and has to re-imagine her whole outfit.

Michael thinks Mila's decision to work in red and white instead of black and white is really refreshing. Wow, I think that's pretty pathetic. She added a color to her design aesthetic! Call a medic!

The designers work frantically until it's time for Joanna Coles to visit. She brings gelato to each designer in the flavor that's their inspiration. She asks Kara if she thinks she has it right. Wow, that's so not helpful. She asks April how she can have a fashion moment if she's working within her comfort zone. She has six hours! Hey, Joanna, instead of playing therapist, why not GIVE ADVICE? I have never missed Tim Gunn so much. Dump "The Revolution" and come back, Tim! We need you!

Tim Gunn: I haven't had sex in 29 years

    By Anna Chan

    Craig Sjodin / ABC

"Project Runway" mentor Tim Gunn is a good-looking, stylish guy with tons of charm. But, as he shared on his new ABC daytime lifestyle show "The Revolution" on Tuesday, he's been celibate for quite awhile.

When therapist and co-host Tiffanie Davis Henry turned the subject to sex and how "15 to 20 percent of people are in no sex and low-sex relationships,"  the style guru dropped his bomb. "I will share with all of you ... I haven't had sex in 29 years," he revealed. "Do I feel like less of a person for it? No!"

The reaction? Stunned silence from the studio audience.

Gunn, who is openly gay, went on toexplain why he's abstained for so long, and basically, it comes down to a bad breakup. "I was in a very intense relationship for a long time and my partner ended it." Gunn said. "Quite frankly, he was impatient with my ... sexual performance. ... It was at the cusp of AIDS, and I think a lot of people simply retreated because they were concerned about their health. I certainly was. I'm happy to be healthy and alive, quite frankly."

Though he is choosing to not have sex, Gunn is quite satisfied with how things are. "I'm a perfectly happy, fulfilled individual," he said.

"The Revolution" airs on ABC at 2 p.m. ET and 1 p.m. PT weekdays on ABC.

Are you surprised that Gunn shared such a personal detail about his life? Tell us what you think on our Facebook page.

Project Piggy: 'Runway' designers make Muppet-worthy gowns

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

    David Russell / Lifetime

Miss Piggy gave the all-star designers a special challenge on "Project Runway."

I would call last night's "Project Runway All Stars" episode a hare-brained idea, as I'm not sure I have an appropriate porcine equivalent (all porked up?), but I think I'll just get to the point. As Angela awkwardly informed our judges (and by the way, I'm still trying to give her some wiggle room to get her footing as a hostess, but I'm beginning to lose hope), last night's challenge was to dress international celebrity Miss Piggy. The designers all seemed to be falling over with excitement about this, which is endearing but also makes me think they're horribly sleep-deprived and a little punchy. I can't imagine most designers stay up at night, praying that some day they'll be able to dress a foam puppet, but maybe the All Stars are just that wacky.

Angela adds that Miss Piggy needs a headline-making cocktail dress to wear while she's walking the red carpet, promoting her new film. Michael can't WAIT to meet her, because she's fashion's dream client. He knows she's a puppet, right?

The designers sketch furiously. Mila wants to make Miss Piggy '60s mod. Kenley loves Miss Piggy, as she reminders her of herself. No comment. The designers dash off to Mood, where Austin and Gordana are going with pink, whereas a lot of designers are choosing black. I have to say, I think color is a good thing for Miss Piggy. Adds some pink to her complexion.

As everyone puts together their outfits, Austin thinks everyone's having fun with the challenge. Well, really, what choice does anyone have? They're dressing a damn toy, for crying out loud. Gordana is going with a free-flowing design instead of something structured. Mondo doesn't think Gordana's dress fits the challenge, and I have to agree. Miss Piggy needs some va-va-voom, and Gordana's making a dress for, well, a model. It also appears to be so short that Miss Piggy would be showing us, well, pork butt.

Although All Stars has been a mostly peaceful, none-too-catty season, suddenly Mondo and Kara start fighting over pink gloves. He doesn't want to argue about it, so he gives in, but he's pissed off. Wow, Mondo, at least stand up for yourself! I have to say, Mondo hasn't seemed like himself this season. Everything he designs is '60s retro, he doesn't seem to be having fun and I dare say his heart isn't in it. C'mon, Mondo! We're rooting for you!

Meanwhile, Mila doesn't know how she'll translate her point of view into the Porcine One. Here's an idea: monochrome color blocking. Isn't that her entire POV anyway? April, having been in the bottom two, is now driven to do her best. She doesn't talk to the other designers or spend time goofing around. I appreciate her sense of focus, but I'm worried she's so nervous about bottoming out again she may start playing it safe.

Mila thinks Kenley is needy for other people's opinions, and she finds Kenley and Kara to be co-dependent on one another. Well, don't worry Mila, no one will ask you for your opinion. Well, not unless they want to make a black-and-white bedspread or something.

Joanna Coles comes in to be mentor-y. I've noticed we always get to hear from a designer about how helpful she is. Because we never see her being all that helpful on screen. Mostly, she seems to ask leading questions that make the designers quiver with fear, then wanders off to terrify someone else. Man, do I miss Tim Gunn.

Joanna gets a nightgown vibe from Gordana's dress. Gordana thinks Miss Piggy will be comfortable. Joanna thinks that's not the point. BECAUSE SHE'S A PUPPET.

Couture catastrophes hit the catwalk on 'Runway'

    Lifetime

The "Project Runway All Stars" are down another designer after Thursday night's competition.

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

Now that we have the horrid "turn random junk into a dress" challenge over with, it's time for our intrepid designers to actually make something nice. I'm sure they're just as relieved as we are, as it can't be fun to bypass Mood for a bag of extra large black plastic garbage bags or a roll of Dixie cups, and I'm not sure what such a challenge really proves, except that some of our designers are more committed to recycling than others.

Speaking of recycling, model-turned-"Runway" hostess and gung-ho environmentalist Angela Lindvall seems to be the biggest bust, at least with viewers, of the season. I'm not ready to turn on Angela just yet, though. She looks a little scared and not quite sure what to do (check out Molly Sims' Heidi/not Heidi flip-flopping on "Project Accessory" for another example), and I'm hoping she finds an individual voice sooner rather than later. If I had to single out anyone who's really a disappointment, I'd have to say Joanna Coles. As good as she was as a judge, those same tough love qualities make her a harsh mentor. What made Tim Gunn so special was his ability to be both honest and compassionate. I can't see Coles doling out hugs anytime soon, honestly.

This week is all about high end glamour, according to Angela. To underscore that fact, the guest judges will be Mark Badgley and James Mischka, who make pretty fabulous evening wear and wedding dresses (and, of course, the usual perfume/shoes/handbags/sunglasses wherein true profits lie). The challenge? A night at the opera! Indulge your fantasies, designers! Mark and James want couture; they want feminine; they want soft. The designers get $350 and one day to do it. Austin is appalled. You need weeks, months! This is couture we're talking about! Yes, Austin, but it's also "Project Runway," and if they ever gave everyone the time they needed, no one would get eliminated.

There's some sketching, then it's off to Mood. April wants to use red. So does Michael. What is up with these two? It's like they have some weird psychic connection neither one particularly wants, which is what I imagine it's like for the Olsen twins on a daily basis. It's driving Michael insane! April doesn't care that they're both going to use red, but he does. Michael makes a quick change to a black matte jersey. Oh, Michael! Do what you want to do, for crying out loud!

Even if their mop dresses were a little similar, I doubt their designs for this challenge would have had anything in common. April is hand-dyeing her dress. Mila thinks April is stupid to be wasting time on a dye job, but she doesn't care. If she screws up, it's only good for Mila. I wish Mila would apply her color blocking aesthetic to her hair so that she could more fully embrace her inner Cruella de Vil. I mean, she has the overplucked eyebrows and harsh make-up down already.

Joanna Coles is in the house to "mentor." Yay. She asks Rami who his competition is, and he picks (of course) Austin. She wants to know how Austin will surprise the judges. He'll have a lame sheath with a black tulle overlay. Joanna likes the color scheme. She wonders if April is wasting her time dyeing fabric. Joanna doesn't seem to be mentoring much, just thinking. She worries that Michael isn't worried enough about how the dress will fit. Joanna thinks Kara's dress is a little bridesmaid. Kara makes the kind of fearful expression only seen on small children and people being photographed on the flume ride at Disneyland.

Sweet P talks about her dress, but I can't pay attention because I think I might be going blind. My eyes! Aaack! This looks like a horribly frumpy outfit someone's grandmother might wear to a picnic. Oddly enough, Joanna doesn't "mentor" Sweet P into burning it and starting over. Joanna asks how Anthony's dress isn't a bridal gown, as it's white. He says it's too sexy for a bride. Good answer, really. Rami says that he feels validated by Joanna, though I'm not sure why. Joanna may be offering good advice and heartwarming reassurance, but we're certainly not seeing it on television.

Mondo declares Kara's design the weakest in the room. I can't disagree (though I'd give that honor to Sweet P by a hair). Kara's fabric is so '80s juniors department it hurts.

There was no making it work when it came to Tim Gunn participating in “Project Runway All-Stars.”

The high priest of style was at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour in Pasadena Monday, promoting his new ABC daytime talk show, “Revolution,” with Ty Pennington and a cast of make-yourself-better experts. (“Revolution” replaces long-running soap “One Life to Live” at 1 p.m. PT and 2 p.m. ET Jan. 16.)

He told a small group of reporters gathered after the panel that he simply could not mentor the "All Stars" because it overlapped with the taping of “Project Runway” season nine.

“Someone thought that ‘All Stars’ and season nine could be taped together and we all could run back and forth,” Gunn said. “To me the workroom and the designers is like a fashion emergency room. (Trying to do both) was just loony cajuney.”

Gunn said he gives “150 percent” on the show, and felt both shows would suffer if he attempted to spread himself between them. His first allegiance, of course, is to the mother ship.

“I’m a lucky guy and I readily recognize how much I have on my plate. I won’t trivialize (what it takes) to do this show,” Gunn said. “I can’t multitask. I don’t even have an iPhone or Blackberry on the set. I have to focus.”

As Gunn was leaving, we asked him to talk about season eight's Mondo Guerra coming back, perhaps to sweep the competition on "All Stars."

“I’m thrilled for him,” Gunn gushed.  “I honestly don’t know how he does on the show, but I’m thrilled that he’s getting a second chance, in a manner of speaking.”

Gunn’s been very vocal about Gretchen Jones’ win over Guerra, which he felt was undeserved.

“I was shocked. Shocked. Shocked. I was on the set and wanted to go and, well ...,” said Gunn, who was obviously too polite to expand on that thought.

But what he did say was that he and "Runway" host Heidi Klum attempted an intervention with judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia, who were on Team Gretchen.

“It didn’t work,” said a chagrined Gunn. “They were intractable.”

    Why, Tim? Why?

“Michael was intent on having someone who worked in an American sportswear genre,” he explained. “That’s what happens in the voting. I asked him, ‘Would you permit her to work for you?’ and he said he would. It was Heidi who came back and said, ‘No, you would not!’  We tried, we really did."

It has already been announced that there will be a season 10, and Gunn said he’s looking forward to it.

“I’m so lucky and blessed to have what I have,” he said.

'Project Runway' returns with a second chance for its all-stars

    Lifetime

Season 8's Mondo Guerra gets another shot at the top prize this season on "Project Runway: All Stars."

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

Aren't you excited that "Project Runway" is back? And not only is it back, but a cast of all stars (which means talented designers AND total lunatics!) will be returning for another shot at victory. Although there are some cast members I never really needed to see again (cough, Mila, cough), I'm not only interested to see if some of these people have grown as designers, but also to find out if the more annoying contenders have seen the error of their ways and might try playing nice this time around. I doubt it, but I'm interested just the same.

Thankfully, we kick things off with one of the designers I not only liked the most as a person, but who truly deserved to win his season -- Mondo. He admits his heart was broken when Gwetchen walked away with first place, to which I say, you and me both, brother. He's thrilled to see Michael again, but I can't say I'm quite as thrilled. Admittedly, I had a lot of sympathy for the guy, as he became the punching bag of season 8, but I suspect he might have had an annoying side that inspired evil Ivy to want to stuff him into a dumpster.

Oh, look! It's Mila! She of the color block! Mila thinks she has what it takes to win. Her designs are current and contemporary! Yes, ripping of a Mondrian is SO modern! And it's not like you can't buy color blocking at Macy's right this minute or ANYTHING! Anthony is also in the house, and the lesson he learned from his season is that he will never second guess himself again, but if I recall correctly, he really should. Jerell is getting his sash and tiara this time. Psst, I think that's "Toddlers & Tiaras," Jerell. Elisa wants to win. She didn't, like, care last time, but this time she cares. All I care about is finding out if Elisa is just as nutty as she was when she was last on the show. Don't let me down, Spit Queen! Austin has always been a star, so it makes perfect sense he's back for the all star season. I won't argue with that, actually, although I'm a little sorry his show with Santino didn't work out. Kenley knows she can come across as snobby and rude. But she's totally fine with it! Oh, Kenley. I now have my answer to whether or not she learned anything from her season (short answer: no).

Angela Lindvall is our surprisingly awkward but sort of charming host.  As much as I love Heidi, I can appreciate that the show has gone in a completely different direction this time around (Molly Sims learned the hard way on "Project Accessory" that she's no Heidi). I get the impression Angela will be a little more sympathetic and a little less gleeful about tearing the designers to shreds -- but it's only an impression.

Angela explains the rules. No immunity. EVER. The grand prize is an exclusive boutique in select Neiman Marcus stores and online. And a year-long guest editor gig for Marie Claire. And there's more! Sewing machines, sergers, office space, it's crazy! Oh, and a hundred grand cash. Mila says all of the prizes were on her wish list to Santa! I think Mila needs a sugar daddy if she doesn't have one already, because Santa is only going to bring her a lump of coal, I bet.
