'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood in jail again

    By Ashley Majeski, TODAY.com contributor

    Louis A Raynor / MTV

Amber Portwood turns 22 on Monday, but it doesn’t look like it will be much of a happy birthday for the “Teen Mom” star. She will likely be spending her birthday alone behind bars in an Indiana jail cell after her latest run-in with the law.

Portwood was arrested Thursday in Anderson, Ind. According to TMZ, she had failed to report for her weekly drug court appointment, which is a violation of the terms of her court-mandated drug rehab program. The MTV star could spend as much as a few weeks in jail while she waits for the court to review her case.

Portwood took a plea deal earlier this year and agreed to participate in the strict rehab program following a December 2011 arrest for drug and probation violation charges that landed her in jail for over two months.

According to The Herald Bulletin, the drug court felt the “Teen Mom” star was “falling short of fulfilling her obligations in the program while recuperating from surgery.”

Portwood’s attorney, Evan Broderick, told the newspaper that Portwood was granted leniency from the program while she recovered from recent surgery. However, she was expected to continue with her rehab program as much as possible.

“I think things came to light that she could have been doing more,” Broderick told The Herald Bulletin.

This is not the first time Portwood has struggled to uphold her obligations to her drug-rehab program. In March, she was nearly thrown back in jail for failing to provide her court-mandated weekly urine sample. For that violation, she was given an extra 30 days of daily drug testing and was forced to write a 500-word report on why she was in drug court.

As of now, she has not been terminated from the drug rehab program, but she remains in jail.

Portwood’s legal troubles began back in 2010 when she was arrested for assaulting her baby’s father, Gary Shirley, while MTV cameras rolled. Shirley, who currently has full custody of their daughter, Leah, found out about his ex-girlfriend’s most-recent arrest from fans on Twitter.

“So just found out she is in jail, WTF I didn't even know,” he tweeted Friday morning.  “I was trying to help Leah get her something [for her birthday]. Postponed.”

MTV viewers won’t get to see Portwood’s latest trip to the slammer play out on “Teen Mom.” The series, whose fourth and final season premieres June 19, is no longer taping. The cast taped the final reunion show back in February.

Do you think Amber will be able to get her life back on track now that she's no longer being filmed? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Whitney Houston's family, including her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and mother, Cissy, will be featured in a new reality show, "The Houston Family Chronicles," which will air 10 hour-long episodes on Lifetime, the network announced Friday.

The show will focus on Whitney's sister-in-law and former manager Pat Houston and Whitney's brother, Gary, as well as their teenage daughter Rayah. Singers Dionne Warwick and CeCe Winans will also be featured on the show.

"The series will follow Pat and her husband, Gary, Whitney Houston’s brother, as they take on their greatest challenge, supporting and guiding Bobbi Kristina as she faces the world alone, without the one person she relied on the most, her mother," the network said in a statement.

"The unexpected passing of Whitney certainly affects the direction of the show," Pat Houston said. " However, it is my hope that others will be enlightened as they watch our family heal and move forward.”

The show will premiere sometime in 2012.

And the winner of 'The Voice' is ...

    By Reuters

Jermaine Paul of Team Blake won TV singing contest "The Voice" on Tuesday night, taking home a recording contract with Universal Republic Records, a $100,000 cash prize, and a shot at his dream of singing stardom.

Paul collapsed into a hug from his coach Blake Shelton and wiped away tears as he thanked his wife, children, and all of the people who voted for him, ending his speech by exclaiming "nobody but Jesus!"

Jermaine Paul, a former backup singer for Alicia Keys, has been named champion of the second season of "The Voice." He tells TODAY what it means to have found success as a solo artist.

The former backup singer for Alicia Keys took center stage as he sang R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" to close out the show, which he also sang in his final performance on Monday's penultimate episode of the show. Paul received embraces from his wife and family members as he sang.

Paul beat out fellow contestants Juliet Simms of Team Cee Lo (Green), Tony Lucca of Team Adam (Levine), and Chris Mann of Team Christina (Aguilera). Host Carson Daly revealed that Paul edged out second place finalist Simms by fewer than four percentage points.

Tuesday's special two-hour finale included a plethora of performances from stars such as Justin Bieber, Lady Antebellum, Flo Rida, and Hall & Oates. Contestants previously voted off the show were invited back to perform with the four finalists.

"The Voice" became one of the most-watched TV shows in the United States earlier this season and was seen a challenge to Fox's top-rated singing show "American Idol."

During the season, it proved very competitive against "Idol," especially in the coveted 18-49 viewer group where the two shows are in a close race to be the most-watched program.

But "Idol" draws many millions more total viewers than "The Voice" - an average audience size of 19.2 million this season compared to 14.8 million for "The Voice", according to figures from the two TV networks.

Do you think Jermaine was the right choice? Share your thoughts on Facebook.

'Safety first' the mantra for 'Idol' this season

    By Craig Berman

Once upon a time, “American Idol” forced its finalists to go outside their comfort zone. If the theme weeks didn’t take care of that, the constant browbeating of the judges was incentive enough. Better to do what Simon Cowell said than to listen to him complain every week, and if he turned out to be wrong and the audience didn’t embrace the new you, that was just a tough break.

    Oh, how times have changed!

Elise Testone, the sixth-place finisher and most recent contestant to be eliminated from "American Idol," chats about her controversial song choice and her edgy sound.

Now we get judges criticizing Phillip Phillips for daring to be too artistic and picking the wrong Dave Matthews song to cover. Though he survived last week, Elise Testone did not, in part (the judges suggested) because she picked an obscure song to sing. Play it safe, they warn their favorites. Don’t do anything too risky, or you might get sent home.

Here’s the thing: That’s great advice if the judges are looking to be strategic. It’s just bad advice if the goal is to develop the finalists, or to have a more interesting show.

“Idol” judges are far more risk-averse than they have been in the past, but they have good reason to be. The show’s voters have not rewarded contestants who go away from their strengths over the past couple of seasons.

Colton Dixon hadn’t been in the bottom three all year, but got sent off two weeks ago after his ill-advised decision to cover Lady Gaga. Jessica Sanchez can blame song selection for her week at the bottom of the charts (and credit the judges for keeping her around despite that).

It’s not just this season either. Pia Toscano a year ago got booted the only week she went away from the ballads. Meanwhile, Scotty McCreery resisted all calls to try something besides country or country rock, and emerged as the season 10 champion. The “Idol” voters have spoken, and they value comfort and stability, not contestants who stretch themselves.

Who's your pick to win the crown this year?

    Launch slideshow

That makes it an easy decision for each individual finalist. If the audience is going to smack you down for trying something different, there’s no incentive to take risks. But it’s bad for the show because it makes the performances predictable and boring.

Everyone knows that Phillip, Jessica, Skylar Laine and Joshua Ledet are going to sound the same every week (Hollie Cavanagh is less predictable, but mostly because we’re wondering whether she’ll relax and sing well or tense up and do her sing-by-numbers thing). It will come down to whoever’s music best matches what’s on the audience’s iPods, which is likely Phillip judging by what has happened so far.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Nobody is ever going to criticize Skylar for singing country rock, or Joshua for picking songs that give him a lot of big notes to power through. But it’s also hard to open new eyes or gain a lot of ground that way. A great performance might inspire more dedicated texting from fans, and a bad one might see them fall asleep before voting starts, but nothing more. It's easy to tune out singers if you haven't liked them in the past, since odds are small that they are going to change this week.

In short, you don’t actually grow as an artist that way, which has been a problem over the past couple of seasons. The finalists are more polished than when they started, but not necessarily better, because they have rarely been stretched beyond what they were already good at.

And while it’s easy to blame the judges, the “Idol” voters have nobody to blame but themselves for that. Just ask Colton Dixon.

Do you think the contestants are playing it too safe? Are the judges being too conservative? Tell us on Facebook.

'Dancing With the Stars' pro Tony Dovolani got therapy after Kate Gosselin

    Kelsey Mcneal / ABC

Tony Dovolani with "Dancing With the Stars" season 10 partner Kate Gosselin.

    By Anna Chan

"Dancing With the Stars" host Tom Bergeron said it best when tennis legend Martina Navratilova and her pro partner, Tony Dovolani, became the first pair eliminated from season 14 on Tuesday: "Sorry, buddy."

Sorry indeed. As many readers have complained about in our "DWTS" chats, Tony has been paired with quite a number of underperformers who had little chance of advancing far into the competition. And as Tuesday once again proved, many of these underperformers have come after season 10, when the pro was paired with reality TV mom Kate Gosselin, perhaps the dancer's most challenging partner to date.

On Friday, the pro hoofer, who has yet to win the coveted mirror ball trophy, appears on Anderson Cooper's talk show "Anderson" via satellite to dish about the popular ballroom bash, and he doesn't shy away from talking about his experiences with the mom of multiples.

"I always feel bad for you because you got stuck with Kate Gosselin," his host said. "I remember watching her dance. I'm still traumatized by that experience."

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

"Wait, wait. Anderson, did you just call it a dance? We didn't dance," the pro replied.

Ouch! And here we thought the pro who has a seemingly infinite amount of patience with his partners was one of the nicest and would never speak ill of a current or past celeb partner!

That wasn't all Tony had to say about his experience ... um, performing with Kate.

The pro told Anderson that after he and Kate finished in eighth place during season 10, he needed some professional help. "There was a lot of therapy involved," Tony admitted with a chuckle.

For fans of the show who watched the season, that revelation may not come as a complete shock. After all, the pro became so frustrated during a rehearsal with Kate that he quit and walked out of the dance studio.

Tony and Martina's "Anderson" interview airs Friday, March 30. Check AndersonCooper.com for local air times.

'19 Kids & Counting' episode shows Duggars' heartbreak over ultrasound

    By Us Weekly

Michelle Duggar suffered a devastating miscarriage last December, and on Tuesday's finale of "19 Kids & Counting," Duggar bravely takes viewers inside her final ultrasound session to document the moment when she learned her 20th child was without a heartbeat.

"We were so excited to see the baby again on the ultrasound screen and find out if it was a girl or a boy," Duggar recalls in an exclusive preview clip from Tuesday's episode of the TLC hit. "As we began to look, I could tell by the look on [the ultrasound technician's] face that something wasn't right."

PHOTOS: Stars who've struggled to conceive

Indeed, Duggar's instincts were correct: The technician later revealed that she could not detect a heartbeat from their unborn baby, whom the family posthumously named Jubilee Shalom Duggar.

"Both of our hearts just sank," Michelle's husband, Jim Bob, says in the clip. "There was no heartbeat and we were both just devastated. Your whole world turns upside down."

    PHOTOS: Celebrity families

The family -- which includes Joshua (who is married with two kids of his own), twins Jana and John-David; Jill; Jessa; Jinger; Joseph; Josiah; Joy-Anna; twins Jedidiah and Jeremiah; Jason; James; Justin; Jackson; Johanna; Jennifer; and Jordyn and Josie -- mourned the loss of their baby in a private ceremony at their Arkansas home shortly after the fateful day depicted on Tuesday's finale.

Is 'Jersey Shore's' The Situation in rehab?

    Neilson Barnard / Getty Images

Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is getting some rest, his rep says.

    By Anna Chan

Uh oh. Could all the partying on "The Jersey Shore" finally have caught up to star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino?

Sources told TMZ that the reality personality is at an inpatient treatment program for substance abuse. His rep confirmed to our pals at Us Weekly, "He has spent the past several weeks at an undisclosed location for much needed rest and recuperation after his extensive production and appearance schedule." But the rep denied reports that the Sitch is getting help for drug or alcohol abuse.

Another source echoed the rep's words to Radar Online, saying, "His friends and family know where he is, he just wants to get away from the public and be on his own for a bit to relax."

The Situation may be trying to unwind a bit between seasons, but where ever he is, he seems to be staying on top of the latest "Shore" news. "Don't believe everything you read or hear," he tweeted Tuesday afternoon.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

As for that R&R, he better get it while he can. MTV announced Monday that it's renewing "Jersey Shore" for a sixth season, which is set to begin production this summer -- and that means more work (and probably partying) for The Situation and his pals. Or he could just chill with pregnant co-star Snooki, who says she won't be living at the "Shore" house.

Do you think The Sitch will be partying hard again during season six, or will he be mellower? Share your prediction on our Facebook page.

Could Janet Jackson be the next 'X Factor' judge?

    By The Hollywood Reporter

Could Janet Jackson be joining "The X Factor"?

PHOTOS: 'X Factor' Finale — the High and Low Notes

Just one week after The Hollywood Reporter broke news that Whitney Houston was under consideration for a judge’s seat on the show, reports have surfaced that another pop icon is throwing her hat in the ring.

After an awkward interaction with Anderson Cooper on Thursday, in which Jackson tiptoed around the subject, sources tell THR the singer has expressed interest in joining the show.

PHOTOS: TV's Priciest Primetime Shows for Advertisers

“Oh my God,” the 45-year-old said on-air with a laugh. “No, I’m not a judge on 'The X Factor.'”

“You’re not currently a judge on 'The X Factor,'” responded Cooper.

“No, I am not,” said Jackson. “But that’s all I really think I should say.”

PHOTOS: An 'American Idol' to 'X Factor' Timeline

Any talks are currently in the preliminary stages, as Simon Cowell holds meetings this week with potential candidates to fill the shoes of ousted judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones.

Another source tells THR that pop bad girl Pink is high on Cowell’s wish list. The singer, whose real name is Alicia Moore, has credibility, Grammy awards and sass, plus “she can take on Simon.” Cowell also has acknowledged an interest in “I Kissed a Girl” singer Katy Perry, telling "Extra," “I worked with Katy once. I think she would be fun because she is hard -- in a good way -- and she’s feisty.”

“She would be great,” he continued. “In terms of experience, success ... brilliant.”

'First Week In' shows what it's like to be 'fresh meat' in jail

    Discovery

    By Anna Chan

It's no secret that jail's no picnic, but a new docuseries by Discovery wants to show you exactly what the experience can be like. And it isn't pretty.

"First Week In" follows folks for seven days as they experience their first time behind bars. Cameras reveal how the newbie inmates deal with their bleak surroundings and the sometimes threatening new community of fellow law-breakers.

An exclusive clip Discovery shared with us hints at the grim reality that Chris Snider faced. The 29-year-old from Tulsa, Okla., was in jail on charges for domestic assault and battery.

"I'm nervous because I don't know if they're going to assign me a cell with murderers, drug dealers ...," Snider admitted. "I'm nervous as hell." (Turns out he ended up bunking with a gentleman named Mr. Nails. Umm ... yikes?)

And as he entered the Tulsa County Jail, the heckling and whistles started up as his fellow inmates quickly gathered to check out the new guy.

    "Fresh meat!" one man yelled.

    "You look pretty!" another added.

    Watch our exclusive video:

"First Week In" premieres Jan. 9 at 9 p.m. on Discovery.

Southwest, TLC team up for reality TV project

    By Tanya Mohn, msnbc.com contributor

Americans seem to have an insatiable appetite for reality shows. They also seem to be endlessly fascinated with the good, the bad and the ugly about their flight experiences.

Now, it seems, the two will be mixed for the television public – again.

TLC, the television network that is part of Discovery Communications, announced Wednesday that it is starting production on a new series that will take viewers behind the scenes of the modern air travel experience.

The network has ordered 13 half-hour episodes, which will be produced by ITV Studios America and based on unprecedented access to Southwest Airlines.

“We were interested in working with Southwest,” said Dustin P. Smith, vice president of communications for TLC, “as it is one of the largest airlines in the country and is known for its exuberant corporate culture and for having refreshing and personal customer service that is regarded as unique in the industry.” Those qualities, combined with an in-depth look at the hurdles of traveling, would create a dynamic show, he said.

Ashley Dillon, a spokesperson for Southwest Airlines, said the airline was chosen also because of its tradition of transparency, which relies heavily on the use of social media, blogs and other media.

“We’re always telling people what we’re doing behind the scenes. Why not put that on TV?” she said “That makes us an attractive airline for a TV show.”

Southwest’s daily operations were previously the subject of a television series in 2004-2005 when “Airline” ran for three seasons on A&E.

“Customers loved that show,” Dillon said. “Airline”aired on Monday nights, and on Tuesday mornings there would be a surge of people applying for jobs, as the show reflected the important role that employees played at the airline, Dillon said. And even six and seven years later, employees featured on the show are stopped at airports by travelers seeking autographs.

“We found people loved behind-the-scenes views.” Most travelers, she said, do not know about all the challenges of flight – from getting all the bags boarded to landing safely.

The new series “will be fresh and new and different,” Dillon said. The earlier show focused on customer service at the airport, but the current production will be broader and will include many more employees: maintenance workers, providers of drink and food, pilots as well as attendants.

“Employees will be the storytellers,” she said.

The series will also feature stories of real travelers – beginning with the purchase of tickets at their homes and continuing for the duration of their journeys.

What’s the appeal of a show based on such a mundane occurrence?

“Airlines are a fascinating business,” said Henry H. Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst and co-founder of the Atmosphere Research Group, a market research company. “It's an industry known for attracting 'characters' in certain roles, especially like pilots and flight attendants. Non-airline employees see the industry as somewhat 'glamorous' thanks to the ability to see so much of the U.S. (and abroad) either for free or on deep discounts. Some mistakenly believe that there is a lot of hanky-panky on crew layovers, though that couldn't be further from the truth.”

Harteveldt said other recent shows to profile the industry include "Fly Girls", a series that “capitalized on the popularity of reality shows, presented against the background of a fun, young, hip airline like Virgin,” and “Pan Am,” “a scripted show that is trying to capitalize on the popularity of the 'go-go' time frame of the 1960s when the economy was stronger and so much was new and possible. It's a clear rip-off of 'Mad Men,' and a bad one at that.”

Harteveldt said he was not surprised that Southwest was chosen as the focus of the TLC series.

“Southwest is a well-known national airline with a reputation for friendly, and a bit off-beat, customer service,” he said. In addition, Southwest is careful about the people it hires, and has a distinct corporate culture which adds to the appeal. “Its employees are generally happy to work there, so you're less likely to hear negative comments from employees.”

A title for the series and a firm date for the premiere have not yet been set, but it is expected to debut sometime in the spring of 2012, Dillon said.

Production is scheduled to begin this coming weekend at Baltimore Washington International Airport and Denver International Airport, with additional airports to be added in coming weeks.

Clicky bits: Octomom is desperately seeking her first date

    Nick Ut/AP file

Nadya Suleman is ready to find a man.

    • How do you end up with 14 kids ... without ever dating? In the case of Nadya Suleman, it's simple: IVF. Still, it's a little hard to believe the Octomom when she says she's never had a date (even moreso if one recalls the fact that she was once married, which Suleman herself seems to forget). Fortunately, the new HDNet series "Celebridate" is about to change that. Suleman will be one of several paired-up "celebrities" on the new show, which will begin airing in October, and told PopEater's Rob Shuter, "This is actually the first time I have dated in my life. I've had one boyfriend." Think she'll find love o the show? Tell us on our Facebook page!

    • Ricky Gervais, whose series "The Ricky Gervais Show" is going strong at HBO, will own a little more real estate on the premium cable network starting next year when his new faux-documentary series. "Life's Too Short," premieres. TV Line reports that "Harry Potter" regular Warwick Davis stars in the comedy, which the site says "is described as a cross between 'The Office' and 'Extras,' with cameos from the likes of Johnny Depp, Steve Carell and Sting."

    • Can you ride a horse? Do you mind maybe getting impaled while doing so? If your answers are "yes" and "no," then sign up for the ride of your life: History Channel is seeking equine experts to appear in its new reality series, "Full Metal Jousting," which begins airing in October, according to Equestrian News. Download an application here, because you never know — even if jousting itself doesn't come back in fashion, you'll always have a shot as a "Game of Thrones" extra.
