Ex-'SYTYCD' choreographer sentenced to 10 years for rape

    By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Now this is what we call facing the music.

Alex Da Silva, former choreographer of Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance," was handed a 10-year prison sentence Friday for raping a female student and assaulting another and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

MORE from E!: So You Think You Can Dance Choreographer Alex Da Silva: Guilty of Rape, Assault

Last September, a Los Angeles jury convicted Da Silva, 43, of the forcible rape of a 22-year-old woman in August 2002 and assaulting a 25-year-old protg with the intent to rape in March 2009 -- part of a series of shocking charges alleging the salsa expert sexually assaulted four different women during private lessons over a six-year period between 2003 and 2009.

However, the panel deadlocked on four other counts, including an additional charge from the March 2009 attack and the alleged rapes of two other women in 2004 and 2005.

Had he been found guilty of those other charges, the Latin dance instructor could've been jailed for life.

While meting out his punishment, L.A. Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy formally dismissed those counts today. She also chastized Da Silva in court, saying he "does not respect women" and "believes he is entitled to do whatever he wants when he wants."

The Brazilian native was originally arrested in August 2009, following a police probe into criminal complaints that alleged he lured four female victims to private one-on-one lessons he conducted in his North Hollywood home and then raped them.

Lythgoe warns of 'So You Think You Can Dance' shakeup

    Patrick Ecclesine / FOX

"So You Think You Can Dance" will undergo a format change according to Nigel Lythgoe, seen above with panelist Mary Murphy (left) and host Cat Deeley (right).

    By Ree Hines

Expect big changes when "So You Think You Can Dance" returns for its ninth season. That's because an important part of the hoofer competition just got cut.

"SYTYCD" co-creator and judge Nigel Lythgoe took to his Twitter account Sunday night to explain the unexpected shakeup.

"#FOX have cancelled the results show so I will have to change the format of #SYTYCD," he wrote. "At least we have another season at the end of MAY."

Exactly what that means for the show is mystery for now, but whatever format changes Lythgoe has in store to make up for the lack of the weekly results episodes, he won't have long to plan for them. The show returns in May, but for Lythogoe and co., it really starts next week with the all-important selection process.

"Don't worry #SYTYCD fans," he tweeted shortly after breaking the news. "I'm thrilled we have a new (season). We'll do our best to find some great talent starting next week in Atlanta."

Until then, the "So You Think You Can Dance" bigwig wants to make one thing clear. Despite the unexpected results show cut, he holds no grudge against the network.

"I'm certainly not mad at FOX," Lythgoe added.  "They have supported #SYTYCD FOR 9 seasons. With the help of Mike Darnell I think we have some great new ideas."

Fans will judge just how great those ideas are for themselves when newly revamped version of "So You Think You Can Dance" returns.

Are you disappointed by the news, or do you think a shakeup could help the show? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Season 8 winner declared on 'So You Think You Can Dance'!

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

The big day is here, so prepare yourself for all two hours of the "SYTYCD" finale! I'm going to live blog this, so let's just get to it. Hey, did you vote? Hope so, because this had to be a tight race after last night.

We kick things off with a massive group number featuring the top 20. that looks very Sonya Tayeh. At the end, our final four take center stage in warrior gear. Love that. Oh, it is Sonya. Cat calls her weird in a fabulous way.

The judges' table is stuffed. Lil' C, Robin Antin, Tyce Diorio, Sonya Tayeh, Jesse Tyler Ferguson of "Modern Family" (yay! One of the good celebrity judges -- and, thank God, not Debbie "It's All About Me" Reynolds), Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe.

The judges give the final four props. Nigel actually apologizes for being insensitive to the guys for telling them they wouldn't win. I'm glad Nigel recognized his mistake and copped to it, actually. He was being honest, and I don't disagree with him, but maybe that was something he could have kept to himself.

Read the full blow-by-blow recap on HitFix.com.

Ex-'SYTYCD' choreographers head to trial on sex crime charges

    By Randee Dawn

The dance is definitely not going on any time soon for either Shane Sparks or Alex Da Silva, two choreographers who have appeared on "So You Think You Can Dance" and who are separately going to trial later in August over alleged sex crimes, according to Dance Track Magazine.

Let's break this down: Sparks (who also worked as a judge on MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew") was arrested in December 2009 in Hollywood on felony child molestation charges stemming from incidents in the 1990s. According to the story, prosecutors believe they can make a case that the expired statute of limitations on the crimes does not apply here.

Sparks is free on bail at the moment, and still working. Sherri Shepherd has hired him to choreograph steps for a group dance at her wedding, according to Entertainment Tonight.

If convicted, Sparks, who has an Emmy nomination for his "SYTYCD" work, faces nearly 15 years in prison. His trial is set to begin on August 16.

Meanwhile, Da Silva's arrest on four charges of sexual assault and rape came in 2009 for alleged crimes that occurred between 2002-2009. All of his accusers were his students at the time.

According to Dance Track, each of the four charges against Da Silva could land him 15 years on prison; that means he may get up to 90 years to life without possibility of parole if convicted. A mistrial earlier this year ended his first trial, but a new trial is scheduled for August 24. Unlike Sparks, Da Silva is in jail, held on $2 million in bail.

"Since both cases are near trial, we cannot discuss the evidence," Sandi Gibbons, a representative for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, told Dance Track. "But we do not file cases unless we believe that based upon the evidence, we can prove the case in court beyond a reasonable doubt."

Last chance for final four on 'So You Think You Can Dance'

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

It’s hard to believe, but the big night is here -- it’s the finals of "So You Think You Can Dance," and our final four will have their last chance to show us what they’ve got. Or to choke. I’m not being mean, I’m just saying it happens sometimes. But hopefully tonight we’ll get nothing but stellar performances, as these four dancers really have been exceptional all season long. I hope everyone’s voting, because I think that with talent like this it’s going to be a close one.

Our judges’ panel is Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Katie Holmes and Kenny Ortega. And I have to mention -- for the longest time I thought Cat Deeley was really, really tall. Well, saw her the other night (along with the final four and Mary Murphy) and realized -- she's tall, but not THAT tall. Our final four are just adorably pocket sized. But I digress. Moving on!

    Melanie and Marko

Our favorite couple M&M will be doing a Doriana Sanchez disco. This should be exciting! Doriana has done some kick ass work for the show and I’m sure M&M can deliver the goods, so let the games begin!

And yet ... technically this is pretty good, but some of the lifts seem to be rougher on Marko than I’d like. And when it comes to upper body movement, some of the disco moves look more like something out of an aerobics class than disco. It seems a little tighter than I’d like. But I will say, I’m being very picky. There’s some joy missing in this dance. They’re working their butts off (and this is a very demanding routine), but it definitely seems like exactly that -- work.

Kenny Ortega thought they looked like they jumped out of “Saturday Night Fever.” Katie loved it. Following her intro, in which she loved the dancers, the season, Cat and possibly the lighting fixtures, I think Katie loves everything! She believes the story they’re telling. Mary loves disco and Doriana and adores Melanie and Marko. But she thought some of the lifts were not great and they went in and out of the style. Nigel agrees with Mary. He thought it was a struggle and thought they were uncomfortable in the style.

Two down, four to go on 'So You Think You Can Dance'!

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

We begin with a pleasant contemporary dance with a big, old flower. It's fine, but nothing special. Which is probably fine, as these kids must be exhausted. We're down to the final six, and as Cat likes to constantly remind us, after tonight there will be four. Two people are going home. One guy, one girl. That's two, as in one, two. Though they aren't going home, as they have to stick around for the finale. But they won't be competing. So, it's like going home, but not. Cat is nothing if not thorough in explaining the meaning of an elimination show to us. Poor thing does have to find endless ways to fill up an hour-long show that only contains about two minutes of information, though. I guess Fox hasn't found a way to show 55 minutes of commercials and somehow convince us to stick around.

Time to meet our judges. Again. We have Lil' C, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe, as Christina probably had to work on her new show, "Up All Night." Or, because she works for another network, maybe they only wanted to give her so much airtime. Anyway, Nigel explains there will be no bottom two, so they'll just announce who's going into the finale. After dragging things out for an hour.

Anyway, we get to see the final six dance their solos for what could be The. Very. Last. Time. Sasha is up first. And, as always, she's phenomenal to watch. She's absolutely my pick to win this thing.

Caitlynn flings herself around the stage and smiles a lot. I still love Caitlynn, but I think she might be going home. It doesn't help that Nigel is pretty obvious about his adoration of Sasha and Melanie. He might as well have held up a sign that said, "Don't bother voting for Caitlynn." But, truth told, as good as she is, I think she has a little ways to go to reach Sasha and Melanie, though I sometimes wish Nigel would just shut up.

Six take the stage as the finale looms on 'So You Think You Can Dance'

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

Okay, I'm recapping from the TCAs and watching this on a teensy computer screen, so if I describe a performance as "blurry," well, that just means I've forgotten myself. But let's get started! Times are EST, not PST, even though I'm PST. Well, you get it.

8:02 Christina Applegate is our guest judge. She's been dancing since she was 3. And then gave it up when she got pregnant. Quitter. Just kidding. I think she'll have some insights. But I always want to believe in the guest judges and I'm so often disappointed.

8:04 Lots of nattering on about National Dance Day or whatever it is. It's all very inspiring. But I want to see the top six perform instead of watch fuzzy home video of random people attempting to be coordinated. Call me crazy.

8:06 It's a NappyTabs routine with Twitch and Melanie It's a Little Red Riding Hood theme. My God, is there nothing Melanie can't do? She's on point. But I'm going to be nitpicky. I liked, but didn't love it.

8:10 I'd love to tell you what the judges said, but the WiFi blew out. This is what happens when you try to work in a hotel.

8:18 Sasha dances with Kent. I'll admit it, I love watching Sasha. She brings such emotion to everything she does, and you see it in every muscle. Even when she isn't technically perfect, she makes up for it with personality and plain commitment. I liked this a lot. Beautiful work, and so raw, But then, I have a hard time judging Sasha.

'Unanimous' vote kicks two out on 'So You Think You Can Dance'

    By Carrie Raisler, HitFix.com

Well, it’s another Thursday and another two contestants sadly must be sent home. Thankfully, “So You Think You Can Dance” has some of the more entertaining elimination episodes on reality television so at least we have a few things to look forward to before we must face the sadness. Also, this week there’s no awkward product placement, which is always a plus.

The night kicks off with the group dancing a circus-themed contemporary number by Tyce DiOrio, set to music from “Water for Elephants.” It figures Tyce would be Team Edward. Although I didn’t quite “get” the number, the music is especially lovely. More dances should be set to movie scores.

After some banter with Rob Marshall, who looks slightly less orange tonight, Cat calls the four girls out onstage to learn their fates. She switches things up by announcing the top two girls for the week, who, appropriately, are Sasha and Melanie. This leaves Jordan and Caitlynn to dance for their lives later in the episode.

Next, the four guys come out with linked arms of solidarity to face the music as well. Marko is the first to advance, with Jess in danger. Then, in somewhat of a surprise, Ricky is safe and Tadd is put into the bottom two. Looks like Nigel’s concern for Ricky caused a few people to vote for him!

Ladies and gentlemen go Gaga on 'So You Think You Can Dance'

    By Carrie Raisler, HitFix.com

Tonight, the dancers are doing what I thought  they were supposed to do last week -- dance one routine with an All-Star, and then another paired up with fellow finalist. This exciting (to me) news is quickly dispensed with, however, so the show can get to what it deems the most important element of the night: Guest judges Rob Marshall and Lady Gaga. I must admit, that’s a lot of star power to blow on one episode. Gaga looks relatively normal, you know, if tonight’s episode turns out to have a Sgt. Pepper theme.

    Sasha & All-Star Pasha
The rhyming couple is paired for a self-professed “bizarre” quickstep choreographed by Jonathan Roberts. There’s a ton of dancing to do tonight so little time for rehearsal packages, which is just fine and dandy if you ask me! The dance itself is quirky, lively and a lot of fun.

Rob calls Sasha beautiful and one of his favorites, but thinks the genre is a bit too restrained for her strengths. Mary says she pulled it off and compliments her technique. Nigel says Sasha is his favorite dancer by a “hair’s breadth” and calls the routine tremendous. Gaga loved it as well and calls it really beautiful. I can’t concentrate when Lady Gaga talks because I want to move her hair out from under those sunglasses. How does she not go insane?!

    Caitlynn & All-Star Ivan
Caitlynn and Ivan are given a hip-hop routine choreographed by Marty Kudelka, about a guy winning back his girlfriend after a fight. The choreography is fairly tame and doesn’t give Caitlynn a real chance to shine. It will be interesting to see the judges’ reactions.

Mary calls it “really good” but not brilliant, and spends most of her time fawning over Ivan. Nigel says the word swag. I really need to look up what that means, don’t I? He does complement her ability to play the character as well. Gaga thinks Caitlynn is sexy and the connection between her and Ivan was magical, and gives some good constructive criticism about following through the movement. Rob says she needs to lose herself a bit more in the dance.

'So You Think You Can Dance' sends two more out the door

    By Carrie Raisler, HitFix.com

Now that we’re down to the top ten dancers, all of the elimination episodes are brutal. When the performance show is as strong as last night’s? It’s ten times worse. Still, one guy and one girl must be sent to the big dance cloud in the sky, or wherever it is they hide them until the tour begins. Let’s get down to it!

The opening group number is a Broadway routine where the ladies wear very, very shiny hats and not much else.  The men wear shiny hats as well but they have much more fabric covering the rest of their bodies. There’s a lot of hat maneuvering in general, and it is jaunty and fun.

Cat kicks things off by asking Neil about his experience judging last night, and then reveals she had a crush on him when she was a teenager. It’s basically adorable. If I ever met Kirk Cameron, I would tell him all about my giant crush on him from his “Growing Pains” days, and then run away quickly before he starts proselytizing.

The first three dancers Cat calls to the stage to learn their fates are Melanie, Tadd and Mitchell. Being in a group with Melanie should have those boys shaking in their dancing shoes. She’s not going anywhere. This is exactly what happens, and Mitchell is put in the bottom four while Melanie and Tadd are safe. Poor Mitchell, saddled with that awful Tyce DiOrio routine. It was inevitable.

10 dance, Neil Patrick Harris charms on 'So You Think You Can Dance'

    By Carrie Raisler, HitFix.com

Hello, dance fans! Liane is busy doing her thing at Comic-Con so I’ll be filling in for her this week, and what a week I pulled: Not only is it the first week for All-Stars, but humankind favorite Neil Patrick Harris guest hosts! (Yes, humankind. It is against the nature of our species to dislike him.)

Neil immediately demonstrates why he’s the most adored man in Hollywood by complimenting Nigel, Mary and the show for bringing dance into America’s living rooms. Neil. We already love you. You don’t need to work so hard. Because there is a lot of dancing to get to – not only will the dancers be paired with an All-Star, but they’ll be performing a solo as well – after the introductions the always impeccable Cat Deeley quickly tosses to the first pair of dancers.

    Marko & All-Star Chelsie
Marko and Chelsie are given a Jason Gilkison samba, with Marko portraying a photographer and Chelsie is Kim Kardashian. I think. I don’t watch "Dancing with the Stars," and Chelsie & Mark Kanemura were my favorite pairing of all time, so it’s great to see Chelsie again.

Marko has been one of the early favorites and he gives one heck of a performance, but struggles with some of the fast footwork here. He’s still a dynamic performer, and it’s a great routine, but he clearly was a bit out of his depth. After the dance, even pro Chelsie is wiped out so it was obviously a tough one.

Neil compliments the dance and Marko in particular, calling him "the guy to beat." Mary loved it as well, so considering she’s the ballroom expert I obviously don’t know what I’m talking about. Nigel mentions the lift they were struggling with in practice, and says they pulled it off perfectly tonight. Again, what the heck do I know? Answer: nothing.

Only 10 remain on 'So You Think You Can Dance'

By Liane Bonin Starr , HitFix.com

So, more than one person has mentioned to me that they feel like “SYTYCD” is playing favorites. Not intentionally, mind you, but the going theory is that the judges’ panel, which sometimes includes Mia Michaels, hesitates before eliminating one of her students. I’m not sure I necessarily buy it, but if Ryan survives much longer in the competition after subpar performances like the one she turned in last night, I might have to consider it.

Last night’s judges are back: Nigel, Mary, Sonya and Jesse. And before we can get started, there are lots of kudos to our Emmy nominees, which include Cat. Big standing O for her. The show got a total of eight nominations, more applause. OK, OK, you’re all great. Can we get to the people who actually, you know, dance?

After all the self-congratulation, it’s finally time to put some couples on the block. It’s Clarice and Jess vs. Caitlynn andMitchell. I don’t think Clarice and Jess did poorly last night, but I’ll be really sad if Caitlynn and Mitchell end up on the bottom, largely because I think their Ugandan child soldier whatever the hell dance was the problem last night, not them. But lo and behold, they’re on the bottom. Darn it!

Nigel gives us an update on Alex Wong. Good news! He was chosen to be an All-Star! But then, bad news. Auditioning for another show, he did the same move that snapped the tendon on his right foot – and promptly snapped the tendon on his left foot. I would think he might not want to do that move ever, ever again. Anyway, he’s off the show and faces another year of rehab. I’m worried he’s going to say screw it and become an accountant. This is so unspeakably sad.

Anyway, we find out who the All-Stars are. Melody (season 1), Allison (season 2), Pasha (season 3) Twitch, Comfort and Chelsie (season 4), Brandon (season 5) Kathryn (season 6) and Robert (season 7).

The wretched elimination process continues. Melanie and Marko are up against Ryan and Ricky. And… Ryan and Ricky are on the block. I’m not surprised. No way are Melanie and Marko going home yet.

Next, Tadd and Jordan face off against Sasha and Alexander. This one’s a little harder to call. While Tadd and Jordan had one killer dance last night, they also had a crappy 80s one (which was crappy because of the choreography, not them). If they pay the price for that, I’ll be seriously disappointed. The next two dancers in the top ten are Jordan and Tadd. Whoot! I think this means Alexander is going home. Yes, last night was a breakthrough for him, but it took too long for him to get there.
